War is very disturbing. This situation is incredibly tame compared to what the Japanese did to civilians at Nanking and all over Korea.

Legally you can use air support for protection in self-defense cases, particularly if the ground forces cannot guarantee their own safety. This would come up as part of the investigation.

If there were just hostile forces in the hospital who were there to get treated, then yes it is a war crime. Israel has made the argument of preemptive self-defense but the US does not argue that. The question is whether or not there were hostile forces actively engaging the security forces on the ground and where those hostile forces were located.

That actually doesn´t matter ... Part IV, Article 19, Geneva conventions.
Before attacking a hospital (or similar protected building) you first have to inform the hospital staff about the loss of its protected status before attacking and ample time has to pass between the warning and the attack (with ample time usually seen as ample time for evacuation of any staff or patients that may reside within the building).

You signed it, you are bound by it.

my guess is that that doesn't apply if forces are responding to an attack in self defense

the scenario you describe is if the US forces initiated the attack

                    that's not what happened

Except it only matters if you are planning on taking out the hospital as a preemptive measure.

It has proved excessively entertaining beyond any considerations of proportionality.
