Basically every parent who gets divorced has to go to those classes. It's bull****.

Perhaps the world would be a better place if all couples (not just after a divorce) would have to attend a parenting class before getting their first child. We´re talking about the coming generation, after all, which may get spoiled if fostered by incompetent parents (and IMHO thee are too many incompetent parents in nowadays society)
(but of course I mean real parenting classes ... and not those who serve as cover for religious indoctrination)

How can you force me to go to parenting classes but not church?

With the same justification that the state can force you (during your childhood) to go to school:
So that you gain knowledge (which may help you to become a useful member of society)

Similarly visiting parenting classes will result in a gain of knowledge (which may help you in turning your kids into useful members of society)

School benefits each and every individual child though. Parenting class is just some bull**** that some family court judge made up to make their job easier. Even if forcing everyone to go to parenting class was good for society it's not good for individuals. It's societal control over individuals, in the same sense that forcing individuals to go to church would be.

Well, there are that pesky first amendmend to the constitution.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Well, this is pretty open-and-shut wrong. Even Kid disagrees with the stupid class, albeit for different reasons. Is there even anything to discuss here?

EDIT: I have a friend who's a convinced atheist but still does AA. Not sure how he does it, I think AA lets them believe in a higher philosophical principle or some such if they're not religious.

AA isn't a religious organisation as far as I know.

In principle no one should be forced to go to parenting class either. I mean, what's next, citizen classes? Good night!

Considering how childish newly divorced parents can be, I have no problem with forcing them to attend such - and that would be something that there can be made laws about.

I think it counts as "vaguely religious".
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Considering it's origin there are probably some, but they would probably loose most of their "customers" if they bashed religion as part of the cure.
