  • I actually missed that post.

You have to know what a Christian is to be one. I just can't understand why someone who calls themselves a Christian hates another Christian because they read the bible and obeys God's Word.

I can understand differences in opinion. I tolerate differences in opinion. I go to a Methodist church bud. I'm not a fundamentalist or an evangelical.

I'm simply asking him a question, because I don't understand his hatred. I really don't.

    • And again you fail to point out where he said that he hated Christians - you're equating disagreement with hatred despite your protests to the contrary. I'll give you credit that you're no longer limiting your replies to childish insults, but this new posting style is still atrocious.

      Consider this hypothetical exchange:
Kidicious: I am not particularly enthused the policies of Barack Obama
loinburger: Oh, so you want to murder him???
Kidicious: What an absurd leap of logic!

I guess that DL crossed the line where he was able to convince most posters that it was real, or that there is something to gain (amusement?) from arguing ridiculous positions.

                  • I think that the attempting to turn the "controversial / fearless / persecuted Christian" moniker into money / power / whatever is a bit of a crapshoot. For example, Roy Moore's nonsense about the ten commandments wound up... getting him right back where he started after a ten year hiatus. On the other hand, Phil Robertson (the Duck Dynasty anti-gay guy) is making a bunch of money talking about his rape, mutilation, and murder fantasies to conservatives. Then again, he was already wealthy and famous before going on the lecture circuit, so my sweeping generalization is that the lesson to be learned about being a controversial / fearless / persecuted Christian is that you'll usually get fifteen minutes of fame followed by a stint of unemployment followed by ending up right back where you started.

Also, I don't think that making money on the lecture circuit is an easy task - most people's biggest fear is public speaking (preceded by being persecuted by secularists). Robertson pulls it off because he was already used to being a celebrity, but Kim Davis is a clerk - not a profession I'd usually attribute to poised extroverts. She might get a ghost-written book out if it, but I'll bet that most of the proceeds from ghost-written books go to the publishers et al who actually did all of the work.

                      • The thing that I find sad/frustrating is that real Christian persecution takes a far back seat to fake Christian persecution.

Isis and North Korea are executing Christians? Meh, put it on the fourth page. Some clerk won't issue marriage licenses? Stop the ****ing presses!!! Some judge is going nuts over a ten commandments statue? Better start a protest!!!

                        • 1. Thus far, she has not acted like the sort of person who dislikes attention. On the contrary, she seems to have courted it, and played off Cruz and Huckabee against each other. Also, clerk or not, she is an elected official.
                          2. Her appeal is not universal among gay-marriage opponents; intellectual ones like Douthat want nothing to do with her, perceiving her as a zealot who will only bring down popular hatred on Christians while accomplishing nothing of use. This only makes her more popular among the rank-and-file true believers who are too blinkered, hateful or just plain dumb to understand the contradictions in her position or the political realities. If your audience is almost exclusively spit-flecked loons, you don't need to be particularly eloquent or quick-thinking; vomited slogans will do.

You know how, back when the Beatles were touring, nobody actually heard them sing in concert over all the hysterical shrieking by teenaged girls? I think we'll see something analogous here.

Stopping ISIS is hard and would involve committing to a large and lengthy war. Also, the Christians involved there are mostly swarthy members of obscure sects most people here never heard of before all this. Stopping North Korea would involve risking nuclear war. Stopping the "persecution" of Kim Davis mostly entails getting mad and screaming at people, both of which are easy and fun. Also the Kim Davis thing could more easily affect things in America than foreign stuff. It's a cinch.

Similar logic prevails on the Left; gay marriage is a far easier fix than, say, massive gun violence, or crappy schools, or climate change. Which is why it was actually pursued and achieved, and all those things are largely neglected. That, and as a civil rights issue it has a sort of heroic sheen built into it among all of us who grew up learning about Rosa Parks and MLK.

The modern Left is really bad at getting anything accomplished - for the most part they just like tilting at windmills. Remember Occupy Wall Street? Yeah, neither does anybody else. What gets accomplished at the G8 and Nato conference protests? Windows get broken. What is Black Lives Matter going to accomplish? Nothing - probably their most famous accomplishment to date (in light of media bias yadda yadda) is when a few anarchists said that they represented Black Lives Matter and hijacked a Bernie Sanders event for no apparent reason. The gay rights campaign is an outlier because it has a small dedicated group of supporters who really gave a **** about the issue and were able to get the rabble to focus for a bit, as opposed to just wanting to stage "I'm angry at god knows what and am here to break windows" protests.
