Originally one of the reasons for the term "colored people" was for inclusiveness - it included Native Americans, Mexicans, Asians, South Asian Indians, and Arabs as well as black people. That's why facilities in the South were labeled as being for the use of "Colored People". Just in case one of those other people showed up at the restroom facilities, water fountains, or theater doors we didn't want them to embarrass us by using the wrong one. Really we're peaceful people, we don't want to call the POlice (the O is long), but we will if we have to.

"Colored" was the polite word for black. It didn't reference any other group, and wasn't meant to be inclusive. Whether a person was expected to use the "colored" water fountain was based on skin color: if someone from India was light-skinned, they used the "whites only" drinking fountain; if dark-skinned, they used the "colored" drinking fountain. "Persons of color' or "people of color" is much more recent and is meant to exclude "white" people only, and include everyone else.

One of our sons told us he didn't like the "didgy" boys at school. When we asked he rolled his eyes and said the "indigenous" boys.

I'm not sure it's all racist. It seems to be human nature to group, shorten and nickname.
