    I'm not sure it's all racist. It seems to be human nature to group, shorten and nickname.
    Shortening and nicknaming are some of the ways that racial slurs develop. In general, it's not respectful. When they are applied against an entire race, the intention is rarely to be cute and even less rarely interpreted that way.

      I once witnessed a gentleman of Australian Aboriginal descent being called "African American". I've never seen anyone look more nonplussed.

          Which is to say that the misuse is so widespread that language scholars are now accepting it as standard. I suspect that the American misuse of "penultimate" to mean "beyond ultimate" will follow this pattern within 20 years.

                I use nonplussed all the time. "I nonplussed the expenses from your food and uniform to calculate your final salary."
