Have you ever thought about how stupid a captain going down with his ship really is? It made kind of sense a long time ago because it was an attempt to ensure a captain would do anything possible to AVOID his ship sinking, but as a moral guide its ****ing appalling.

"The captain going down with his ship" was because the captain is supposed to be the last man OFF the ship -- making sure that the passengers and crew he is responsible for get away safely.

If the train crew made efforts to get every passenger into the "safe compartment" before they left, it might apply.

Sometimes I think Kentonio is just disagreeing to disagree. A locked train compartment door is no match for a determined killer with an AK-47 or even a pistol given enough time. Time is exactly what the terrorist would have had if no one had risen to oppose him. Your train staff "who did everything right" and those few passengers would have just ended up dead a few minutes later than otherwise. If the train staff had stopped the train and tried to get everyone off, then I would agree that they did the right thing.

Kentonio is sounding a lot like the boss of Thalys when he defended his workers. Ken, do you own stock or something?

I'm saying US culture drives you to see things in childishly simplistic terms of bad guy/good guy and brave/coward. You can add right/wrong in there too if you like.

For the staff to get nearby passengers to safety in the face of a terrible threat to all their lives is an act of intelligence and compassion. The passengers who restrained the attacker felt they would otherwise be killed, so their action was logical and intelligent. What I'm having a serious issue with is this schoolyard attitude where because of the latter, the former suddenly becomes cowardice.

This kind of bull**** leads to people risking their lives in ways they simply do not need to, which as I mentioned is apparently why you lose so many more firefighters than other countries.
