Our garbage men do a good job for everybody... exactly what they are supposed to. But if you really read Rah's post, you will notice they went beyond the expected job for him.
I also tip the garbage men... And like Rah, I can put ANYTHING on the curb, and they will take it, regardless of the many rules they have. Just the other day, one of the people on the block put out all this stuff that violated the rules, and it wasn't picked up and they had sticky yellow notes on everything explaining why it wasn't picked up. I just laughed, because I had put out a bunch of stuff almost identical to their little pile, and mine was picked up. I tip at restaurants, and every other place where it is expected. When I was young, I made most of my money on tips... so I understand the concept. Garbage men belong on the "List"

Yep Dinners that think like Dinner end up with spit in their food. Yep it was served up hot and on time, but with a little extra sauce.

And as most tippers will eventually see, is that it really doesn't cost them what you'd think. All the places where I'm a regular, I would bet that all the stuff that I get free totals more than the tips.
So it's either free stuff or exceptional service. And everybody is happy. WIN WIN.

Yeah... it is amazing how many free drinks you get at a bar where you tip well... I'm sure if I subtracted the cost of the free drinks from my tips, I would probably be only tipping near the cheapskate level. So it's a win/win as far as I'm concerned. I get more bang for the buck, and the bartender makes more money

Ming and Rah are right - I give our garbos bottles of beer at Christmas and such, say hello when I see them. Funny my bins are always emptied and neatly replaced, unlike others.

The black cat caught a big fat mouse. She saw me on the porch and brought it up. She was chomping away eating it head first. Maybe this is the difference with stray cats. She eats what she catches. I've seen domestic cats catch stuff and they don't seem to know what to do with the prey.

Well they do get fed every day so the the hunt is more for just the chase then dinner.

              and

say hello when I see them.
Yeah, it costs nothing to be nice.

                  Cats have household staff.

The boss (cat) will be pleased with you.

I tip at restaurants and bell hops but not really any where else I can think of.
