You don't get to decide what is Constitutional or not. See: Rule of 5 http://www.supremecourt.gov/ctrules/ctrules.aspx
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

― C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man

Then what does it matter? If it doesn't carry the power of a treaty, then it isn't worth the paper it is written on. Iran would be the first to know that.

This is part of the reason I don't like Obama. He is willing to "temporarily" do a lot of things that could easily turn out to be large wastes of time & money...Simply because he will not focus on what CAN be done in co-operation with Congress. His "My way or your an obstructionist" is just as bad as Congress's "Your way ain't gonna happen...no matter if it is good or bad".

Ruling by fiat has never really worked out well....

If treaties have to be ratified by the senate then senators are part of the negotiation process. They can't be acting "without authority of the United States" since they are part of the government.

makes sense to me, I'm sure its SOP for senators to let the prez know what if anything they want in a treaty to get their vote

The idea for the letter was just a warhawk freshman senator (Cannon, R-Ark) having a wet dream.
Very poor judgment on the GOP's part to sign off on it. Makes them look churlish and childish.

The rest is all just news cycle political theater. Both sides.

I can't really be bothered to be upset by this. Trying to undermine our diplomatic relations with other nations is something of a national past-time whether in government or on vacation. If anything, they are being Patriotic™

1 vs 47. Surely, these are the same?

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, or not.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                      Same.

But I liken it to Al Capone and tax evasion. If it gets at least one of those crooks locked up, I'm for it.

While I'd love to see 47 retarded senators go down, I think the 'authority of the United States' may be implied as a Senator. I'm just saying that it was very much a douche move, just not as clear cut a violation of the law as some here believe.

Agreed. Definitely a douche move. And quite murky.

It was to show this case is much, much worse than one guy 30 years ago. Oh, and how is this not a violation of the Logan Act?

Iran Offers to Mediate Talks Between Republicans and Obama

TEHRAN (The Borowitz Report)—Stating that “their continuing hostilities are a threat to world peace,” Iran has offered to mediate talks between congressional Republicans and President Obama.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, made the offer one day after Iran received what he called a “worrisome letter” from Republican leaders, which suggested to him that “the relationship between Republicans and Obama has deteriorated dangerously.”

“Tensions between these two historic enemies have been high in recent years, but we believe they are now at a boiling point,” Khamenei said. “As a result, Iran feels it must offer itself as a peacemaker.”
