It is not what is happening. There are new thrusts pushing deeper into Ukrainian territory. Putin is responding with more force, not less.

Allowing Putin to win here is dangerous. The precedent it sets is important. Are we going to live in a world where we tolerate people like Putin taking grabs out of countries when they feel like it, or are we going to live in a world where people like Putin respect and fear the consequences of doing so, and countries are able to self-determinate and settle their differences diplomatically? That is what is stake. Not just Ukraine. The entire international system we have built up post-World War II and post-Cold War. Remember, it took a lot of sacrifice to put that system in place.
Putin AFAIK says of himself that he is a student of history ...
it is very clear that with Ukraine he more or less follows Hitlers example with Czechoslowakia and Sudetenland.
And we know that Hitler wasn´t satisfied after League of nations didn´t put up any real resiatance towards his landgrab of most of Czechoslowakia.
Fortunately in our modern intercnnected world, economic sanctions may be more helpful than they could have been against Hitler (especially considering that Nazi germany (also thanks to the alliance with russia, prior to Barbarossa) was economically much more independent than russia is nowadays)Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. The only difference being that Hitler didn´t risk a plebiscite about Sudetenland but rather chose to annex the Sudetenland right away.
Nazi-Germany even gave an example for Holiday-soldiers, with Legion Condor in the spanish civil war
But as I wrote, as yourself I think that economic sanctions might finally be successful in getting Putin to agree to a peace planTamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."

And yet, not our problem.Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

A funny thing, if you look at maps of the situation at the time of the Minsk agreement and the maps of the situation 2 weeks ago you find that mysteriously during the ceasefire Ukraine made some modest gains. I'm not sure that's a very "cease-firey" thing to do."I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

It "wasn't our problem" when South Korea was invaded by North Korea, but the benefits of rescuing them have been enormous. It wasn't our problem when the Kuomintang lost mainland China, but the benefits of rescuing Taiwan have been enormous. It is absolutely worth our time and treasure to keep a fledgling free-market democracy from falling into the hands of a tyrant. And that's in addition to preventing a precedent where dictators feel free to make land grabs. China's eyeballing the South China Sea while Putin marches around Eastern Europe. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
