I just can't picture any of them, with the possible exception of the atheists, being competent to run a proper dissident-purging police state. They'd be halfway through the first purge before they decided to lecture the goon squad on using gender-inclusive pronouns in their internal memos. After two hours the goons would get PO'd and kill their leaders.

Is Salon more tabloid-like? Yeah, we've made no secret of that. I've said all along that our formula here is that we're a smart tabloid. If by tabloid what you mean is you're trying to reach a popular audience, trying to write topics that are viscerally important to a readership, whether it's the story about the mother in Houston who drowned her five children or the story on the missing intern in Washington, Chandra Levy.

this is a natural result of the 'mainstream left' surrendering the economic battle and essentially accepting capitalism, leaving their discourse on these matters as something like: "we'll let landlords and bosses **** you over, but we'll feel really bad about it". what's left is this kind of lifestyle bull**** and identity politics that appeals to a certain kind of middle class metropolitan liberal, but leaves everyone else cold.
