  • It's now spread to Illinois. Is there no end to the costs the nation will pay for California's stupidity?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

      • That doesn't answer my question

It says most vaccines come from dead or weakened bugs

No, all immune systems need it. It is just better to achieve the same goal without causing severe harm to your organism.
It doesn't, just like resisting varicella, measles, smallpox or a long long list of similar diseases doesn't confer genetic immunity either.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_immune_system
Most of the people today with immunity to plague got it from their ancestors who survived it, not from getting the plague themselves. If your ancestors survived smallpox easily, your chances of surviving it are better than people whose lineage was isolated from the bug.

Yeah, in the same way that dying from smallpox made other people better at surviving smallpox.
How does dying from smallpox make someone else better at surviving it?

Which is why pretty much all diseases for which there are vaccination campaigns used to cause thousands of deaths and disabilities before the vaccines were introduced, despite having been around and affecting human beings for thousands of years.
The people who didn't die or become disabled had better immunity and that was passed along to their offspring. The fact a disease has been around doesn't change their reality.

            • I still like this scene from House:
              Spoiler:
[House walks away. Cut to the clinic and House is in an exam room with a young mother and her baby.]

Young Mother: No formula, just mommy’s healthy natural breast milk.

              House: Yummy.

Young Mother: Her whole face just got swollen like this overnight.

House: Mmhmm. No fever, glands normal, missing her vaccination dates.

              Young Mother: We’re not vaccinating.

Young Mother: [Takes a toy frog and starts to make frog sounds] Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit. [Giggles]

              [Baby smiles and giggles too]

              House: Think they don’t work?

Young Mother: I think some multinational pharmaceutical company wants me to think they work. Pad their bottom line.

House: Mmmm. May I? [He takes the frog and starts to do the gribbit noise with the baby]

              Young Mother: [Whispered] Sure.

House: Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit. [The baby laughs] All natural no dyes. That’s a good business: all-natural children’s toys. Those toy companies, they don’t arbitrarily mark up their frogs. They don’t lie about how much they spend in research and development. The worst a toy company can be accused of is making a really boring frog.

[Young Mother laughs and so does House. The baby giggles again]

House: Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit. You know another really good business? Teeny tiny baby coffins. You can get them in frog green or fire engine red. Really. The antibodies in yummy mummy only protect the kid for 6 months, which is why these companies think they can gouge you. They think that you’ll spend whatever they ask to keep your kid alive. Want to change things? Prove them wrong. A few hundred parents like you decide they’d rather let their kid die then cough up 40 bucks for a vaccination, believe me, prices will drop REALLY fast. Gribbit, gribbit, gribbit, gribbit, gribbit.

Young Mother: Tell me what she has.

              House: A cold.

[Cut to House leaving the clinic.]

The troll grew boring after you essentially said the polio and smallpox vaccines were bad for humanity.

                    Yeah, I heard about that.

Though, I'm hesitant to blame an entire state for the actions of a few hundred (or even thousand) nincompoops.

But I have to say, Mississippi handles their vaccinations well.

gotta give credit where it's due

As I said, the new polio-like enterovirus didn't evolve from the polio virus, it evolved from a completely different enterovirus. The polio vaccine only affects our immunity against the polio virus, not against other enteroviruse. Therefore the polio vaccine had nothing to do with the evolution of this new virus.
We have plenty of exposure and vaccines spread it around even more "unnaturally".
Vaccines don't spread organisms around, vectors do that. [/quote]

If you want to talk about stupidity then why don't we talk about the anti-vaxxer protestant fundamentalist church in Texas or the fundamentalist church in British Columbia which both were at the center of measles outbreaks in the last couple years? Something about all you need to do is pray enough and getting vaccinations is a sign that you don't trust in Jesus enough or something.

Well, if that had happened thirty years ago, nobody would be listening to Jenny McCarthy now, and that's for sure. But it's too late now. The only solution at this point is one-upsmanship; every attractive med student in America has to pose naked to get the kind of credentials the anti-vaxxers are (apparently) looking for.
