I'm basically against embargoes. If we want to take down a regime, we should use bullets, not trade. Trade has never worked. Whereas taking down other peoples' governments is basically why we have bullets. If we aren't willing to use bullets, maybe it's not so important after all.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Just like Vietnam's downfall caused communism to envelop the entirety of southeast asia. Because slippery slopes always happen if they're merely theorized about.Originally posted by DinoDoc View PostI don't disagree with the intention of ending the embargo. I disagree with ending it as a reward to a government for taking American hostages. It seems like the surest way to encourage more of the same in other similar regimes.
Name the regimes that are in this nebulous space between contemplating taking Americans hostage explicitly to elicit a response from the US, and actually doing so? The fact the Communist Party in China (to use a convenient example) is still in power makes your optimism a little weird.Originally posted by N35t0r View PostThe embargo is an excellent PR tool for the Castro regime. For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Actually, yes. Cambodia and Laos both became communist. Had we won in Vietnam, it might have been prevented.Originally posted by MRT144 View PostJust like Vietnam's downfall caused communism to envelop the entirety of southeast asia. It could be argued that American intervention in Vietnam inspired support for those regimes because nobody likes arrogant invaders or collaborators.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostActually, yes. Yes, because the embargo has totally worked. I've been there. I've talked to many people. It won't happen overnight, but ending the embargo will help, not hinder the process.Originally posted by DinoDoc View PostThe fact the Communist Party in China (to use a convenient example) is still in power makes your optimism a little weird.
Regarding China, they have a significant economic advantage over Cuba, and so far have managed to keep dissent down, but there's a blooming middle class there, do you think the communist party has a tighter grasp on the country now than 20 years ago? Do you think, if the Chinese economy continues growing, that Chinese people won't start demanding more freedom on the long term?Indifference is Bliss

This is wrong. The regime is popular because Cuba has always received subsidies from other nations. The regime is able to claim victory because of this. But handouts can't be depended on forever and the regime is facing a very real possibility of being cut off. This is why reforms are being implemented now, because Raul doesn't want the embargo. Ending the embargo is absolutely retarded.Originally posted by N35t0r View PostThe embargo is an excellent PR tool for the Castro regime. Dude, a lot of people (a lot) worldwide utterly hate the us for it's countless invasions and meddling in other countries' politics, and that has provided huge political support to anti-us factions. Do you think those are generally liberal and pro free market?Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostIt could be argued, but it would be argued incorrectly.
