GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A man is facing a felony menacing charge, because two Colorado sheriff's deputies say they thought a banana he pointed at them was a gun.

Nathan Rolf Channing, 27, was arrested Sunday, according to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.

According to an arrest affidavit, Mesa County deputies Joshua Bunch and Donald Love said Channing pointed the fruit at them while crossing a street.

The deputies said they feared for their lives even though they saw that the object was yellow. Bunch wrote in the affidavit that he has seen handguns in many shapes and colors.

He wrote that Love was drawing his service weapon when Channing, of Fruitvale, Colo. yelled, "It's a banana!"

Yes, the man accused of pointing a banana at police is from Fruitvale.

And yes, one of the police officers he pointed the banana at is named Bunch.

And, no, we didn't make this up.

The deputies say Channing told them he was doing a trial run for a planned YouTube video and he thought it would "lighten the holiday spirit."

Mmm, presumably the reason the deputies were slow off the draw is they were shocked that the person carrying a deadly banana was not obviously of African American appearance.

    Lucky for Mr Channing.

The whole militarization of police/SWAT team thing is almost entirely due to a retarded federal program that basically gives free surplus military equipment to cops. You have some podunk rural sheriff's department with APCs. It's ridiculous and I think most Americans agree it needs to end. The cops love it of course.

I don't know that the cops love it. I think they just know that they might as well get their piece of the pie. I'm sure they'd rather get money for useful training or salaries or something.

On the other hand, cops have been using armored cars for almost a century and it's not a big deal that they're getting them now. The main reason the feds are handing out armored cars is really because we bought gajillions of them to use in Afghanistan and Iraq and now we have nothing to do with them.
