Speaking as someone who bought a new set of knives last week, I can confirm that you don't.

Not really. Big cartridges are a lot harder to shoot well, the ammo is expensive, they're loud, etc. Basically while people may use belted magnums, it's better to use an appropriate sized cartridge for the game. You don't need an elk****er to drop whitetail.

In the long term they're better for post-apocalyptic survival, since you can reuse the arrows or create replacements. You've just got to survive for the first few decades after the apocalypse while everybody else uses up their gun ammunition.

            You can reload bullet cartridges.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

I figured using black powder would render the gun inoperable after awhile, though I suppose this wouldn't necessarily be the case with something like a revolver.

Why would you ruin the gun? It tends to be corrosive but if you clean it thoroughly you'll be fine.

Modern cartridges don't use black powder. They use smokeless powder. HC is right that you can reload cartridges, but the only reusable part is the brass. You can also cast bullets out of lead pretty easily, but that still leaves you having to manufacture primers and powder. Making primers is not really feasible on a small scale.

Would it be feasible for Joe Anybody to make smokeless powder?

I don't know, maybe. It's not quite like black powder where you can buy the ingredients in 50 pound bags at Home Depot but I don't think it's that complicated. You can buy it in big jugs. There are also a bunch of different varieties. Pistols use much faster burning powder than rifles.

Home depot will not survive into the post-apocalyptic period.

i suspect the key to our survival after the apocalypse is to get things like Home Depot running again... instead of running around playing with guns

That's how New Quahog fell. No guns.

Why wouldn't they just kill you and take over your area given your obvious lack of defenses in a post-apocalypse?

because I'm going to be in a community of people... complete with local police/security

running around on your own in the woods is a recipe for suicide, not survival
