considering that western military action created the space for ISIS to emerge, i wonder why people think that western military action can defeat them.

No, we can't wipe out ISIS permanently or eliminate them as a threat completely (at least not without becoming worse than ISIS), but we sure as hell could stop them from rounding up large numbers of civilians in Iraq to be executed on a regular basis. And could stop it for as long as we were willing to keep them from doing it.

I think going into Iraq initially was a mistake, and how we handled it after going in was a lot of mistakes. But I don't think it would be a mistake to try to stop what amounts to genocide given our involvement in what lead to the current situation.

We've got all the men of entire villages being beheaded by these medieval madmen. I don't really feel like getting into whether toppling Saddam was a good idea or a bad idea. The situation we have right now is that an organization matching the Nazis in prejudice and murderous intent is currently running a nation-state sized chunk of territory, with aims on terrorizing the rest of the globe. Yes of course we should ****ing stop them.

but is that really true though. i mean the 13 year western military presence in afghanistan hasn't stopped the 'taliban', a group with whom ISIS shares some common features, from killing civilians.

if the west is going to take action, then it would probably be better all round if it takes action aiming to resolve the underlying problems rather than to salve consciences.

Fully agree. It's the duty of the countries of the civilized world to act in any way needed.

ISIS obviously has been able to make gains they never could have dreamed of while we were there. As I said, we can't eliminate the threat of ISIS, but we sure as hell could limit them greatly in how much damage they are able to do to civilians in Iraq. (Especially true since the civilians they target are the ones that would be most likely to work with us, so ISIS couldn't hide within those communities.)

perhaps we can restrict their operations somewhat, until of course the west gets tired/forgets and then they come back and do the self-same thing. hence my point about the difference between solving the underlying problems (or if you prefer, changing the circumstances which allow space for groups like ISIS), and merely salving consciences.

why 'solve' the problem. the area over there now makes for good training ground for US pilots (real and drone pilots). a good place to test to tech and weapons too. it may sound sad, but true.

Considering one of the problems is they don't approve of our way of life. Our morals, our religion, etc., it's going to be very difficult to resolve all the underlining issues.

that's not what i mean (and besides this is kind of irrelevant anyway, ISIS doesn't care about the west, beyond a certain type of rhetoric that is; its concerns are more local). i'm talking about the local circumstances which allow it to exist and prosper.
