Here is a partial view of my transit map. Each area is isolated from road traffic. The only way to travel is between them is by metro or rail connection. Even with that, my usage is still only about 1/6 of the population. It seems most people just stay home and do nothing... or teleport to their destination?
oh, I should admit that the pic of the massive crowds was an anomaly I inadvertently caused. I move a metro station that had all those people waiting in line. They all still wanted to go to their destination and walked over to the stop after I moved it. I'm using a ton of mods. One of which is a traffic no despawn mod that prevents cars (and pedestrians, I presume) from despawning after failing to reach their destination after a certain amount of time.
Stuff will still disappear. It just takes a lot longer. That traffic jam a few posts back was probably made worse by it.
I love this game. Nearly 300 hours played in the first monthTo us, it is the BEAST.

On the left is the commercial island. On the right, the industrial. They are connected by road purely for the cargo traffic. I had a redundant cargo rail connection. I will be redesigning this cargo system to be better looking and more efficient. The idea is to separate regional rail traffic from local rail traffic.
All the workers travel via the metro station hub at the lower part of the "island".
I'm using a custom map of the Pittsburgh area.
Today, I'll be starting a new city using a block made in the asset editor designed to encourage cims to walk. The only traffic is service vehicles and cargo. To us, it is the BEAST.

I've experimented more with the game mechanics... traffic, specifically. Here's my results:
This is my newest city. Zones are segregated from road traffic. Citizens don't need to travel to offices in order to be considered employed. I've put office in the lower right. I'll add more as the need for jobs grows.
This city is not built with the vanilla game. I am using a variety of mods. I will list them later.
The outside highway and rail connections go directly from the edge of the map to this center junction where it is distributed to the zones. Office traffic goes right. Residential goes up. Commercial goes up on its own line.
Traffic is distributed evenly and efficiently into the city. There is no way to leave the city by car.
Note the population has grown to almost 150k from 140k. The game is running as I write this post. The city grows rapidly. Growth is very steady. This is the first phase.
My goal is to reach the 1 million popcap. The challenge is maintaining a functional city with that many people. Traffic is your biggest adversary.
The infrastructure is set up. The city is just filling up,
Fifty six metro stations cover the entire residential and commercial sector.
Full transit map.
Close up. Buses shuttle people around the metro hub. Otherwise, everyone walks. Travel to anywhere in the city can be accomplished by hopping on a metro, traveling to the downtown hub, perhaps getting on a quick bus ride, then connecting to another metro line.
The downtown area is comprised mostly of landmarks and monuments. Hadron Collider, Eden, and Fusion plant are all but necessary for a build like this. All special buildings are in this area. Citizens can only reach it by metro or by foot.
All city services are contained in this block. In my imagined view of my utopian city, this is one giant complex. But for this experiment, this placement will have to do.
Offices are chilling. Nobody really goes to work.
The city was built by using modular sections that I created in the asset editor. Input comes from the highway. The roads inside the city are two way single lane. The six lane two way section allows each road to be connected. I've found this is better than leaving each road completely cut off from the rest of the zones. City services work better when they can access more.
Pedestrian pathways cut across the city allowing for easy access.
I'm using a "rays of light" mod that provides the rays of sunshine. To us, it is the BEAST.

Nju pätsch ...
now, after already beding able to bring the road- and train-tgracks underground, we are also able to have subterranean pedestrian movement
I already have mny city crisscrossed with pedestrian tunnels and every new district uses those tunnels, instead of the pedestrian bridges I used at the beginningTamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."

Wow, some policies truely are great ...
I have a disctrict (named "Bahnhofsviertel") around the main station (i.e. the one that connects to the outer world and brings in tourists) where I have mainly big and small commercial zoning, as well as almost all of the unique buildings of my city.
Formerly I only had l,egalized Marijuana in this disctrict.
Now I expanded the policies for this district with small and big business benefactor, as well as tax increase for small and big businesses (after all, if they are especially sponsored they should also be ready to pay more taxes).
Well, this step almost tripled my cities weekly income (from ~15k to 40k € per week)Last edited by Proteus_MST; July 5, 2015, 11:04.Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."
