(I haven't gotten that far yet)
I build with this general layout, using the grids spaced this way, allowing for the highway connections. When I get access to high density, I replace the zones but leave the roads intact. With the zone tool, on pause, right click, left click. Done! Then you just wait for it to grow and add zones according to demand. It's mostly a 1:1 ratio with offices, occasionally throwing in some commercial. I keep the commercial consolidated in the center of the "downtown" area because everyone wants to go to commercial. Offices, I keep as a buffer between residential and the highway. People don't like the noise pollution. Office don't care.

But the game is a sandbox. You can do what you like. I've been playing with "garden cities". Where the residential isn't connected by road to anything else but service buildings. It funnels citizens into the mass transit connect. I'm currently thinking of doing a rail line since I have a rail station in my downtown area. A quick train trip in and it gets thousands of citizens into the heart of the city without anyone being able to drive there.

The commercial area on the left is what my town started as. All the low residential got kick out to make way for the skyscrapers and whatnot.

The highway in the center is the original starting area. I built around the existing highway. The tightly packed straight sections are my design. I was able to incorporate elevated two way roads into the offramps of the existing sections.

      • I've only used two lane roads for all my streets. The trick is managing the traffic by separating it. All or most of the residential to commercial traffic is routed through the metro hub in the center. Industry gets its goods deliveries from the cargo rail hub on the right in addition to some deliveries via the highway connections. Also, there's a cargo harbor connected outside of this area that also sends and receives goods. Deliveries to the commercial areas happen from the highway. There is no residential in this area to interfere with the traffic.

Road traffic is heavy but always flowing. No backups.

        • oh, i'm also using a mod which doesn't let the cars despawn when they are stuck in traffic... so there might be heavier traffic than usual... we'll see what this looks like with 250k people

I am having a lot of fun with this game but your city designs are also fun to look at. It's trying something very different from Maxis'. I hope the mods add a little more challenge (this traffic respawn mod is an example of that). BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY I WANT A ****ING MOD TO DE-EUROPEANIFY AND DE ****ING PUSSIFY THIS ****ING GAME ABOUT 10 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE, COMPLAINTS BEGGINING IN ORDER OF MY EXPERIENCING THEM: m:a :anfgry:

            1) THE CHIRPY BIRD CONSTANTLY TWEETS ABOUT HOW GREEN ENERGY IS SO GREAT AND HOW THE MAYOR CARES ABOUT THE FUTURE BECAUSE HES BUILDING GREEN WIND MILLS, LOL AND THE WIND MILLS ARE OBVIOUSLY MORE COST EFFECTIVE THAN COAL POWER PLATNS AND PRODUCE MORE POWER, WHAT THE **** I SIGNED UP TO PLAY CITIES SKYLINES NOT CITIES PHIL DONAHUGE THANK YOU :angy: :angrry:

              • I now have learned how pretty amazing pedestrian walkways are (the ones you can find in the park/leisure menu).

I nowadays make all city blocks larger than would be needed for zoning ... and fill the gaps with pedestrian walkways.
They definitely like it and it takes a large chunk out of the road traffic (and it seems to me that it also stimulates commercial growth, when you connect commercial and residential areas via them).

Most of my larger roads now are crossed by pedestrian bridges as well
