I would like to see an empire building game where you don't control settlers, but instead set policies like that and see where they go.

    • I built a second city. When I'm done pooping and showering (not at the same time), I will post about it.

My other city started to fail due to inefficient traffic management, zone placement, and demographics. With this new city, I am paying special attention to goods and freight traffic. Also, highway onramps and offramps work better when connected to a one way road. Traffic lights are the devil. I am using only small roads and small one way roads. So far, things are running smoothly. My goal is to have a city free of traffic lights.

You may like Distant Worlds: Universe
In this game you can delegate practically all empire control to rather intelligent AI ministers ... and also have a wirde range of possibilities to adapt your Ministers behavior to your tastes.
WHich more or less also is a necessity, as the galaxy in Distant world is a little bit bigger than in other Space 4X-Games ... you definitely wouldn´t want to micromanage your empire when it surpasses a certain size

              • Since each tile is 2x2 km, I think I'm gonna set up industry at one end, and everything else at the other; it shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to drive from one end to the other anyway.

                • Having industry next to some residential isn't so terrible. In order to upgrade, industry needs the same sorts of services in addition to the land value that other zones provide.

It seems counterintuitive. I know. I will post screens of my newest city soon.

                    • Here's my second city:

I initially kept industry away from residential but found that industry benefited from having residential close. In order to upgrade, industry needs the same sort of services and leisure. It also seems to do better with higher land value, but doesn't raise land value on its own.

The tricky part with industry is fire hazard/protection. I made a separate district for all my industry and gave it the smoke alarms policy. City wide, it just isn't necessary. But with decent coverage and that policy, you can get industry's fire hazard in an acceptable range... which helps it upgrade.

You want industry upgraded because higher level industry has jobs for educated types. You can have offices, of course, but a diversified city seems to function better... imo. Be sure to plan for the freight road traffic. Those goods deliveries can mess your traffic situation up.

In this part of the city, goods get shipped in from the freight rail station (upper left). They then get transported on the highway and filter into the city through that on ramp where I have that vehicle selected.

On the other side (I rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise), another freight station provides goods. I have the traffic maps on so you can more clearly see the routes. I'm still making small changes to optimize traffic flow. All my surface streets are small two way or one way roads.

Most of my industry is level 3.

With regards to highways. I found it is best to keep the areas of my city completely inaccessible by surface roads. You need to use the highway to get around. This keeps traffic relatively light. Before I built my majestic highway system, roads were completely gridlocked.

                      Traffic map:

It may look like a mess. I also didn't make use of the curve tool since I had to be so exact with the placement of ramps and such. But it functions extremely well. I'm at nearly 30k people.

There must've been a patch. I wonder what else got added/fixed.

                          • So industry doesn´t cause air pollution which makes it undesirable for residents to live near industrial zones?

Sounds like I have a little bit relearning to do, from things I am used to from Sim City

                            • It makes noise pollution at least. And traffic.
