  • it's worth remembering that the siege of gaza started in 2006 as a collective punishment for the kidnapping of an israeli soldier.

      (7) would have changed if Netanyahu wasn't looking for a cynical pretext to deal yet another blow at the Palestinians. Israeli politicians are notably corrupt and military operations are a primary method of diversion there.

      That's reason 1.

Reason 2 is that Fatah wishes Hamas to recognize Israel's right to exist to enable peace talks as a condition for unity government. Hamas has shown some openness to the idea, but they're bartering hard for it (they're asking for other concessions from Fatah in exchange for that one, from what I've read). It would be a disaster for Israel's militarists if Fatah and Hamas came up with a joint offer of peace that includes a recognition, hence another attempt at preventing this eventuality.

      • ...so all Hamas had to do to was keep cool (5) and not fire rockets. Fatah cooperated, why couldn't they?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

It continued due to rocket fire.

no, in fact it continued due the election of hamas, and its subsequent ouster of fatah in the gaza strip.

see this is what annoys me about the e-idf, the blind support for israel, up to and including war crimes, combined with an unwillingness to even learn some basic facts before spouting their bull****.

The rockets have been a near continuous fact of life.

What is that supposed to imply?

If something has to be done against Hamas, tell us what it is. Remember it is a political party that has won legitimate elections.

                    • Yes, rockets. Rockets, along with suicide bombers, kinappings, and other acts of terror are a form of collective punishment, are they not? You are attempting to get your way by threatening an entire population, albeit in a piecemeal fashion. They are certainly war crimes, and result in civilian deaths.

I think I was clear enough. Hamas members were implicated, and they were nowhere to be found. Where are you going to look? as you said yourself, the Hamas leadership had given orders to stay calm, then broke those orders themselves when the action took place. It makes me think they only said that for appearances sake.

                            • I don't think you understand the question.

How is peace going to be attained?

Notice how everyone in this thread who claims Palestinian responsibility for the conflict refuses to provide a peace plan, with a list of concessions.
