I really didn't enjoy the re-upped Star Trek.

Spock has to save the Romulans' sun with what appears to be a souped up exercise bike and a horse hypodermic ?

    Downhill from there.

No, he made MI3, which I assume is bad because 2 was bad and because he made it.

Plots in all the Star Treks have always been secondary to the interactions of the primary characters. (and most plots were equally weak or absurd and in TOS these absurdities were a trademark)
The interactions in the new movies were done just fine so they were entertaining. The people that think everything Star Trek has to have great meaning (or make sense for that matter) are just plain silly.

Yes, the people who want their stories to make sense are the silly ones. That's it.

Any movie where going to the enemy base/headquarters/homeworld is less daunting than a trip to the corner store in a questionable neighborhood is a **** movie.

I'm not saying that no effort should be put into the plot, I'm just saying that it's always been secondary in ST so we shouldn't be surprised or have high expectation.

Both new Star Treks were decent as action type movies, which implies that you not think about them too much. But were not Star Trek movies.

My primary complaint is that the new Treks don't cleave to the spirit of Star Trek. Roddenberry's vision was of a humanity that had grown up but not lost its sense of wonder, put its own house in order yet still wanted to explore. The new Treks are just sci-fi action flicks with the trappings of Trek.

More than that, they directly go against what Roddenberry was trying to achieve. George Takei was one of the first, and thus far just about the only, Asian-American actor to become famous for something other than martial arts. So of course Sulu's only noteworthy achievement in the first new movie was to fight with a damn katana (yes, I get the reference, fencing HA HA HA), which he brings into space with him for some reason. Oh, and he forgot the Enterprise's parking brakes. I guess that's good, since it goes against the Asian stereotype of being really smart and competent?

Then there's the end. Nero's magic do-whatever-the-scriptwriters-need substance goes critical, and his ship starts to implode. He rejects Kirk's offer of rescue. Do they try to show further humanity and try to rescue some of his crew? Or, failing that, get the hell out of there? No, they hang around firing their guns at a clearly doomed vessel, thereby putting their own ship and all aboard into totally unnecessary danger. I think that would've counted as a war crime if it wasn't so utterly pointless. Their conduct was too idiotic to even qualify as barbaric. That's low even by Hollywood standards, let alone Star Trek's.

Anybody read Takei's autobiography, To The Stars? A good read, and he specifically addressed the foil/katanna thing years in advance. He was asked if he'd rather do something samurai or the d'Artagnan bit in The Naked Time. You can see in the episode which he chose...

So bad and faintly racist, too...

Go back and look at TOS and you'll see equally thin and absurd plots.
Many were simply social commentary. And they really had to stretch believably to make their points.

Star Trek made an entire bad season under a new executive producer who didn't get it. So?

So out of the original series, by your own definition, was at best 33% crap.
I've got a clue for you, the other 66% wasn't all great.
