My primary complaint is that the new Treks don't cleave to the spirit of Star Trek. Roddenberry's vision was of a humanity that had grown up but not lost its sense of wonder, put its own house in order yet still wanted to explore. The new Treks are just sci-fi action flicks with the trappings of Trek.

If you're gonna do Star Trek, do Star Trek. Why bother if it's just another CGIfest with cartoon violence and TnA? Abrams could have made those movies, removed everything Star Trek about them (rename characters, setting, new ships, etc), and nothing about the movies would have suffered.

The new ones weren't terrible movies, per se. They just weren't Star Trek movies.

Well that's the point of ever re-boot, really. The creators want to take the characters and settings and make entirely different movies with them (well, or make the exact same movie, for $$$ - I'm looking at you Amazing Spiderman)

Not true. In the Tobey Maguire movies, Peter was an adorable, deeply likeable kid. In the reboots, he was a selfish, entitled, misogynist creep with criminal tendencies. Totally different take on the character. Can't wait to not see the sequel.
