You have absolutely no knowledge or experience in organizational structure.

    It's cute.

    • I GUESS THE MILITARY DOESN'T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH IT EITHER BECAUSE THEY SEEM TO THINK IT MATTERS

It doesn't matter. I still have two hands.

That's what you guys are discussing.

            • Yes. It does matter. If you simply cut and pasted the Marine corps out of the Navy and put it under the Army... to accomplish everything the Marines do... it would cause a lot of chaos.

Explain to us how this would work. Describe in detail how you would move the Marines corps structure from under SecNav to SecDef. You are overloading DoD while underloading the Navy.

It's simply retarded. If you need to reduce the overall size of the Marines Corps and can still accomplish the same things, then do it. Either way, the same number of people will be employed. You are confusing downsizing with "cut and paste" movement. Doing that to an organization is unnecessary.

If all you are doing is cutting and pasting, it's just a name change. If you are downsizing for efficiency, removing unnecessary redundancies, then that can be accomplished under the current structure.

I've seen no argument made whatsoever about the benefits of structural changes. Everything has been about reducing spending and troop levels. That has nothing to do with structure.

So explain to the class, Mr. Bigshot, your solution.

But you are just going to troll back weakly... you are a discount troll without the ability to actually discuss anything.

Nobody is taking stuff. I am America. My hand is Army. My hand is Navy. It doesn't matter if they are both called Army. I still have two hands.

I didn't think my metaphor was that deep that it would be so fundamentally misunderstood. That's on me I guess.

I'm not sure any organization in the world could come close to the logistical ability of the U.S. military into difficult to acess areas regardless of if they are trained to kill or save (or both). That, I think, is the point trying to be made.

Moreover, I am not arguing that we never should have had a Cold War military. I am arguing that we shouldn't have a Cold War military NOW.

OK, but as mentioned by someone else there will be other powers that will try to fill any void left. Who are they likely to be? I'm doubting it'll be liberal democracies.

My view of it is that a lot more people would be dead now were it not for the relative strength of the US military in the world. Small consolation to the average Iraqi, but there it is.

Nice strawman. Sure I overstated the importance of the military, but I never said anything about the US economy not counting.

                          • hardly a strawman. you said:

There's a reason the world follows the green back and your debt gets carried for free compared to other nations. You want to lose the hammer? Fine. Welcome to the consequences of debt that nobody gives a **** about.
the clear implication being that if the US mililtary was cut, it would cause people to no longer trust the US to repay its debts or somesuch.

what reasons do you have for this view?

Our mission statement from Title 10 of the US code includes that the Marine Corps "shall perform such other duties as the President may direct." I do not believe the other service branches have such a statement explicit in US law.

                              • Has anyone told you lately that the "every Marine is a rifleman" thing is dumb? Because it is. My brother's in the Army, as a hacker type--we're not allowed, and don't want, to know the details. Something that involves hacking into/disabling computer systems. But since he has a bum shoulder that dislocates easily, he's "not deployable," so they're letting him go. Their loss, since he's going on to a very nice civilian job with the skills they taught him. But seriously, WTF? If a war breaks out, they are not going to be sending highly trained spooks onto the field with a damned rifle.
