Outside of the Arab elite, no one used deodorant until the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wash your underarms and trim the hair and it won't stink.

Deodorant was known to 8th century Andalusians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziryab). I don't know if it was a short-lived fad or if it continued for centuries but given Arab cultural concerns with ritual cleanliness (that influenced Islam), I wouldn't expect the practice to have been short-lived.

Baking Soda absorbs odors and coconut oil has antifungal properties.

Read the NY Times article I posted. Yes, after I sweat on a run, I usually take a shower though once the sweat dries, I don't exactly smell so I don't always do that. Maybe a quick dab of water on the armpits. But on other days when I don't sweat, I don't really need to shower either. I shower maybe 4 times a week.
