I really hope you get to experience being poor one day, so you realize what a complete **** you sound like sometimes.

Yes, and the process of assessing that is called triage

Wow that was quick! I show up and they even took me 10 minutes early. $30 and 15 minutes later I have a bandage on my foot and the cut is held together with strips glued onto my skin (it was too late to use stitches apparently). The ankle is slightly bruised and I will be hobbling for a couple of days but that'll teach me a lesson I suppose.

            **** the ER.

So, I actually agree with using triage at emergency care centers, I just think that there should be non-emergency care centers where it's first come first serve and you have to pay. It turns out these exist, they're called urgent care centers, and reg was too silly to go to one.

I went to a UPMC urgent care center a few months ago, the service was excellent.

So the system of making people with minor ailments at ERs is working perfectly.

My post about ERs and paying to jump the line was just hypothesizing how you'd make it work without letting poor people die on the side of the road.

Got a better option at midnight?

And I wasn't the person there with the least serious ailment, I think mrs. bellyache took that award although she got seen well before me because she claimed to be in unbelievable pain (she was on her way home clutching her stomach and boo-booing after 20 minutes or something, they probably gave her maalox or something).

You mean like it does now already, where people are seen in order of seriousness of need, and no-one just gets to jump the queue because they're waving a handful of dollars around?

What would actually probably solve the problem would be to just make sure that the whiny idiots always have to pay copays.

That's up to the insurance carriers. Some insurance does require copays for emergency care - it isn't forbidden after all.

I'm saying the ER should charge the $15/$20 copay up front regardless of what the insurance policy is. You come to the ER, you plop down some cash. Not a lot of cash. It's actually hilarious how little a charge it takes to dissuade people from using something they don't really need. As soon as you put money on the table people start taking things a lot more seriously.
