  • Has Your Health Insurance Been Cancelled by Obama?

I got a letter from my health insurance company yesterday. I rarely receive anything from them since I never get sick, so I thought, "They must have cancelled my insurance and now I get to buy some of that fancy Obamacare everyone's talking about."

Nope, turns out they just want to remind me that I have insurance and there's probably some stuff I can do with it.

So, have you recently discovered your that your health insurance has been cancelled do to the ACA?

No poll, because they are too hard for Slowwy.

Not cancelled. My policy is still in force and I got a notice from BCBS that it is available to renew.
But if I opt to change to the new ACA offerings, I can't go back to it.

My dad has a high-deductible plan through his employer, where he is a partner, so he is a business owner. Which means we can't use an HSA. However because it is through an employer and he is an owner, we will be able to keep our high-deductible plan. And apparently I can stay on it until I'm 26, which is absurd

Although I'll almost certainly have my own insurance by the time I'm 23, at the very latest.

Coverage of dependents until their 26th birthday is a real boon to college grads who can't find a decent gig. I, for one, was very thankful for this minor provision of the ACA.

It turns out one of the black people whose identity I stole last year lost her insurance. Big mistake to leave your Obama-bought iPhone lying around Capitol Hill sister.

Is it seriously not obvious to you why that's such an atrocious policy?

By the way, while you're sitting around wracking your brain trying to figure out why my contemporaries can't find work, might I point you to this very law? And in some small part, that actual rule itself?

It's very frustrating to have people say that it's a wonderful rule for 20-somethings, when the whole law is really just one big fuck you to my generation.

why would an insurance company want to kick adult children off policies paid for by the parents?

seems like the best deal they can get, insuring young folk is more profitable than us pre-medicare old farts - and they sell people supplementals to medicare.

But if I opt to change to the new ACA offerings, I can't go back to it.
Is that by law? that would suck

They wouldn't. But the parents aren't paying for it. The employer is. The employee isn't likely to be willing to cough up the money from his paycheck to add the children to his plan, and the employer isn't going to want to basically give him a raise (in the form of medical benefits) cause his kid can't find a job. What this rule really is is just a stealth minimum wage increase for parents of 20-somethings. Another factor contributing to the unemployment in this country. This whole law is a large part of the reason we have seen absolutely anemic economic growth.

I should note that the fact that I can stay on my parent's plan until I am 26, in my particular case, is basically irrelevant. Virtually all our medical costs are out of pocket, since we don't need insurance to cover something we can just afford anyway, so our insurance only covers catastrophic stuff, like "Surprise! You have cancer." Which is also the kind of plan that I will get (if it is still legal, for fuck's sake ) when I get my own coverage.

Now, OBAMA tells me that this is a bad deal. I'm getting ripped off. My dad is getting ripped off. How dare those insurance companies not cover contraceptives or cosmetic surgery and also checkups and random ****? Wouldn't you rather pay 10 times as much to pay for things that you don't need or could just afford anyway should you decide that you want it?

                        God.

I love your pretense that the ACA preceded and somehow caused the unemployment issues of college grads.

In point of fact, at the time of the change in BCBS policy (which, at that point, was voluntary on their part), my daughter would have had a policy lapse and been uninsurable the past two years due to a pre-existing condition.

So yeah, that was really demeaning.

If they didn't, people would stay on their parents' family policy until marriage/forever. Insurance companies had a line in the sand at age 19 (23 for full time students) until the ACA extended it. Some states have gone further (Ohio and New Jersey IIRC) with age provisions out to 28 and even 30.

It may not have preceded it, but it certainly is making it a ****ing hell of a lot worse. Well at any rate, I'm glad your daughter got something good out of this law. It may have come at a huge price from millions of people, but hey, someone you know benefited, so it must be a good thing!

EDIT: I appear to have misread. Well, if it was voluntary on the insurance company's part, there's nothing wrong with that, obviously.
