  • All 50 states are at will. I've never signed an employment contract, closest thing was a memo that states that I understand that I can be fired for anything at any time except for certain protected discrimination reasons.

    • Hilariously, despite making a big show and shutting down fed websites all over the place, healthcare.gov is still up. The Executive Branch is going out of its way to inconvenience people, except when it's Obama's favorite things. They don't need appropriations to keep websites online.

      • Holy **** there are places that have employment contracts? That's absurd.

Don't be stupid. My employer is not my master. When I agree to provide a service to a company on either a temporary or permanent basis, I am willing to locate to a place that suits that place of employment and structure my life around their business. The idea that they can turn around at any time and just fire me on a whim is utterly ridiculous. No professional here would accept that kind of completely one sided professional relationship.

Jesus Christ. Where do you come up with this garbage? Do you have any actual life experience? Or are you just some sort of right-wing chat bot spewing out whatever nonsense seems to make "sense" to your idiotic ideology.

It's the natural progression from having skills that are in demand.

If it works out, a big if, then it would indeed be a major break through. The President is going in with his eyes wide open though and is demanding complete verification of every step. I hope you're right but History has shown that this isn't going to end well. Think back to the IRAN hostage negotiations. Guess who one of main negotiators was? You'd be right if you said Rouhani.
And how long did he drag out those talks. He's an experienced staller. How long do they have to stall before it's immaterial? And if he gets any concession on the sanctions, he's going to be quite the hero back home.

There's nothing one sided about it. If you're as valuable as you say you are, you're too valuable for them to fire you without a decent business reason.

                  • They do have employment contracts in the US, but they aren't as widespread. They are usually reserved for the really high paid professionals.

                    • If my employer wanted to lay me off, they'd have to pay me 20 months pay in severance.

I had one of those once...they are meaningless when the company goes bankrupt.

The nice side of no contract is that you can pick up and leave just as fast as they can boot you. When the economy is cooking that makes sure that they go the extra mile to keep you happy.

Pretty hard. All the sleaziest politicians have shown up to pander there.

No, rank and file Democrats would revolt if they gave in to Republican demands that employers get to dictate wither a woman can get birth control or not.

20 is pretty sweet. I'd only get about 4. The bright side is that if they fire you for cause they don't have to pay it but when it's only 4 months it's not worth the effort to prove so they just pay it out. And you can collect unemployment during the 4 months. But yes it does seem like the euros have it better in these matters.

No they really don't. Observe their unemployment rates. These things are directly related.
