You've been there, right? And the Lincoln Memorial?

open air, and open 24 hours, whether park personnel are there or not. They are spending more money closing these than they would keeping them open.

    Then there's this:

    ...

-- National Park Officials closed down the educational Claude Moore Colonial Farm near the CIA in McLean, Va., even though the federal government doesn't fund or staff the park popular with children and schools. Just because the privately-operated park is on Park Service land, making the federal government simply its landlord, the agency decided to close it.

A Claude Moore Colonial Farm official said that the privately-funded staff is on the job Wednesday, but barred from letting anybody visit the historically accurate buildings or animals. Anna Eberly, the managing director, sent out an email decrying the decision and rude National Park Service staff handling the closure.

Pointing to Park Service claims that parks have to be closed because the agency can’t afford staff during the government closure, Eberly wrote: “What utter crap. We have operated the Farm successfully for 32 years after the NPS cut the Farm from its budget in 1980 and are fully staffed and prepared to open today. But there are barricades at the Pavilions and entrance to the Farm. And if you were to park on the grass and visit on your own, you run the risk of being arrested. Of course, that will cost the NPS staff salaries to police the Farm against intruders while leaving it open will cost them nothing.”

She added: “In all the years I have worked with the National Park Service, first as a volunteer for six years in Richmond where I grew up, then as an NPS employee at the for eight very long years and now enjoyably as managing director for the last 32 years — I have never worked with a more arrogant, arbitrary and vindictive group representing the NPS. I deeply apologize that we have to disappoint you today by being closed but know that we are working while the National Park Service is not — as usual.”

...this is Republican doing? I suppose it might be, in the "see what you made me do" sense.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

    • Park Service wants the barricades up because if someone collapses in there, there will be no park rangers available to give CPR.

      In an open plaza.

      In a major city.

...and specifically, in a crowd of 80 year olds with caregivers.

          Are you retarded?

You actually want companies to throttle your access to web pages and thus reducing competition?

And most areas have a single broadband provider... two if they are lucky. Chicago is one of the internet's main hubs and we can choose between two companies.

IF the man can work out a compromise with the mullahs and with Russia but Republicans refuse to work with him that that says more about Republicans than the President. Oh, and stop lying, the House and the Senate spent a lot of time and effort negotiating a deal on the budget, Republicans got a hell of a lot more out of that deal than Democrats, and right after the agreement was finalized tea party Republicans came up with a new list of demands to add on to it many of which were completely unreasonable. It's perfectly clear they were not negotiating in good faith and were deliberately trying to scuttle the agreement and shut the government down.

No amount of lies or spin can change that fact.

You're a ******, dude. Seriously, why would you want your ISP to be able to tell you which websites you can visit and which ones you can't? They're like the phone company (which has to service all telephone numbers) and the USER should be the one in charge not the company who wants to control the user. That is the way it is, that is the way it has always been on the internet, and it would be a travesty if Republicans allow Verizon or Time-Warner to be able to dictate which websites Americans can and cannot visit.

I'm getting old so my memory sucks so please remind me of those supposed compromises with the mullahs and the Russians where they had to give anything of substance up.
The mullahs are still enriching plutonium and the Russians are still laughing at us.

The whole idea of net neutrality is to prevent corporations from censoring the Internet and denying people open access to Internet content.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

                        • The whole problem with net neutrality is it's the government censoring/restricting the internet instead and you can't choose who your government is (easily anyway). Also net neutrality is mostly a solution seeking a problem. If you asked most people if they would be willing to pay less in bills and in return have faster access to the top 15% of websites than the bottom 85%, I bet most would jump at the option.

No. Netflix's selection sucks, it's all ****ty British television (pleonasm) and geeky cult garbage.

Who'ld have guessed petulance would be the order of the day? Someway somehow the shutdown needs to be made painful otherwise it might be the same yawn-fest impact as the sequester "end of the world" we had to deal with.

They're working on those now in Geneva with the six party talks. Essentially Iran has said they will allow full review, oversight, and inspection of all nuclear facilities in exchange for sanctions relief. If it works out, a big if, then it would indeed be a major break through. The President is going in with his eyes wide open though and is demanding complete verification of every step. We'll see if a final agreement is reached in Geneva but it does look promising right now.
