Most of the children like reg, HC, and kuci don't have a real world knowledge of or experience with medical costs... and that's understandable. They are young. I don't suspect any of them had parents with significant illnesses.

And unless they die suddenly in a car accident or something, they will inevitably face those costs. The realization will only come at that point. But it's likely, even then, that they won't fully comprehend the situation. I'd suspect it comes from their father (or family in general), but HC and Kuci have a strong ideological filter that distorts their reality. And that's fine.

Also, the option value of bankruptcy reduces the incentive to purchase insurance (relative to a world in which you cannot discharge debts in bankruptcy).
