Honestly, I'm way more into this - posting in this thread is just relaxing.

Actually, you being the secret brother og HC an Kuci - the havoc by revealing that is what I would call pretty entertaining

I'm a psychopath, while Kuci and HC are sociopaths. There's a significant difference.

It is pretty clear, Manning - Hero; Government - serving itself and not the people = criminal. We - screwed. Not yet like Manning, but many will be.

In the end even in DDR (east Germany) life was pretty decent even though you had full surveillance state... no reason why we would not hope for the same. Except that commies were making up jobs for just about anyone, and you had to buy a Trabant if you wanted a car... so here there are no jobs for everyone and cars are full of variety. It can still be a good life though, as long as you do not think anything ill of the subjects that are forbidden, noone picks on you for any reason and just just get lucky in the shoal so sharks don't pick you up. Yep, for most of us we will be OK.

Manning isn't Snowden. Snowden can at least credibly claim he didn't put any lives at risk with his leak and the public had the right to know about it. Snowden is also still living a real life version of The Terminal while he decides where to apply for asylum, IIRC.

They are alike in the sense they have a vague sense about what they want to achieve. I don't know why people are comfortable with the idea that you can allow such people to consider themselves ultimate arbitrators of what's right and wrong.

Manning can now also claim that, as the courts have ruled he didn't aid the enemy.

You don't have to feel comfortable about it, but when it turns out your governments have been committing (and deliberately concealing) things like war crimes and mass domestic surveillance, then the whistle-blower becomes the lesser of two evils.

He did do all of the other things he was charged with, summing up to up to 160 years worth of prison time. Big ****ing difference that is. He sure as hell wasn't a whistleblower, he didn't even READ any of the stuff he released. He just copied it onto CD-Rs labeled "lady gaga" and emailed them to rapist extraordinaire.

And by the way, accidentally shooting a Reuters reporter who was hanging out with insurgents isn't a war crime. This whole problem of people having really expansive definitions of what they consider war crimes, to include anything pertaining to fighting a war, is really ****ing dumb.

The big difference, far as I can tell is:

Manning = Hero because he unveiled the dastardly deeds of the Bush/Cheney-Dark lord regime and embarrased them accordingly.

Snowden = Villain because he unveiled the dastardly deeds of the Bush/Cheney/Obama/Biden-****** regime and embarrased them accordingly.

My respect for Snowden died when his chosen countries to flee to included China, Russia, and Latin American banana republics. That said, what he revealed was of the embarrassing, not damaging variety, and he understood what it was he was releasing. Manning was just angry at his chain of command and decided to get back at the army for putting him on restriction. It was a ****ing temper tantrum, not a heroic act.

you seem to be fine with war crimes being committed, so why would you care about the finer points of defining them.

To be fair he's never tried to hide the fact he has no problem with civilians being butchered in warzones. He was quite explicit about that last time Vietnam came up.
