But he no longer indignantly yowls whenever we touch his lower back.
That's a good sign, no sores underneath?

          Nope, nothing but smooth skin.

Poor bugger just never had to deal with long fur before we took him in.

We also have a set of siblings. They were diagnosed with FIV about six years ago, they're both 10 or 11 now, going strong, healthy as can be.

Our two are matching litter mates also. Thirteen and getting lazy. Ok, they started getting lazy a long time ago.

You can read his story here, on Galnemer's blog.

Incidentally, anyone have any advice on how to best get rid of big-ass fur knots and mats on a giant cat's back?
Onodera is right. Cut his hair short and let it regrow keeping him brushed and clean if possible. How does kitty like getting wet in the shower? I know the stereotype is that cats hate water but I had a cat growing up who would happily climb into the shower with people (even pawing the shower door until you let him in) and he'd even jump into the backyard swimming pool especially if one of the dogs did it first. I guess he was just a cat who thought he was a dog.

                  Edit:

It looks like my post was a day late and a dollar short as usual.
