  • Because Google TV is a piece of junk?

I'm not talking recording Hulu shows. Yeah, that's not legal, or at least is not clearly legal. I mean recording cable. Tivo and others do it, and it's been determined to be generally legal; it's just a matter of signing up the patent licenses.

Charging by the hour is actually a pretty interesting idea. It might motivate companies to make better games with more replay value.

          • Honestly, if we get away from the 'we always could do this so we should be able to do this' concept, not treating games like physical goods is not unreasonable. Not (just) the 'digital goods do not degrade over time' bit, but really the 'license' bit. You enjoy a game for X time, you pay [creators of game] $Y in exchange for that. It's not entirely logical that you can then take the game and resell it to someone else, who can enjoy it without paying the creators anything. Paying by the hour, or by the game, or whatever, is not unreasonable. MMO style isn't that different after all - paying by the month.

The only difference is game publishers would need to adjust their pricing down slightly to make it a fair trade to consumers, many of which buy a $60 game anticipating getting $5-$10 back later from Gamestop. Perhaps simply not raising prices for a while would be sufficient. And, in addition to that, do a somewhat better job with the reverse auction pricing (though gaming pricing is miles ahead of book pricing here). That way the 'cheaper' option is still there, as long as you don't mind waiting a few months to play it (not that different from used).

I would like to see 'preview lending', ie lending a title for 5 hours or something to a friend's account. Long enough to play significantly, not long enough to finish the game. Losing that kind of ability would hurt consumers unreasonably, I think (unless demos got significantly longer).

            • If you think the xbox is infringing on your privacy or whatever don't ****ing buy it

I personally am not worried about some private company tracking me on its OMG CAMERA IN MY LIVING ROOM! and if I were I'd just a printed out picture of my dad's face in front of it.

                Horribly inefficient though, IMO.

It's one of the reasons I don't intend to buy it and hope it fails.

                  • Honestly, for me the camera is less of a privacy problem than the mic just because there is an easy block for the camera. Not that I'm overly fond of either hanging around without an off switch. That said, I do have a Kinect now and am thoroughly underwhelmed by its capabilities when hooked to an XBox.

                    • You could just put a resistor in the microphone input. Probably ~60 ohms? I'd have to stick my multimeter on the mic to see, but it doesn't matter much.

I assume a good number of people are already making that same decision, and more will follow. At this point, all Sony has to do is not screw it up and they win the next round. Just make some straightforward technical upgrades to the PS3, slap a 4 on there and don't copy any of the competition's abysmally stupid ideas.

I won't but doesn't Microsoft have a right to know why people don't want to buy their stupid, creepy product?

i don't think it's quite that, but there are strange things that could happen as *ahem* "Unforeseen" consequences given the nature of microsoft's requirements.

Well, apparently you know more about this than Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Google because none of them are touching this.

Matt Booty [General Manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms] dodged a question about whether or not the Xbox One will be able to record TV shows directly, as it does gameplay, but hinted that the feature would be unavailable due to rights issues.

                              • Probably wouldn't be able to get the licenses for stuff on their online store if they made it able to record off of cable.
