    The Taiwan strategy conspiracy

    Conspiracy theory:

    China, sensing that the world would not understand North Korea's new leader, offers him a sweet deal to incite and actually start a war with ROK and US.

    As tension increases on peninsula, China uses crisis as a reason for troop movements and upgraded military preparedness posture.

    War breaks out on Korean peninsula. U.S. commits troops and assets to defense of South Korea.

    China warns against invasion of the North. Puts entire military on alert. Kim Jong Un escapes to China having been promised asylum.

    At height of conflict, China launches full scale attack on Taiwan. Tells US that it will enter Korean conflict if they intervene in Taiwan...warns US that any ships entering Taiwan military conflict area will be attacked with Anti ship ballistic missiles and full might of Chinese military.

    Taiwan falls within days without US intervention...China offers to force cease fire in North Korea if US will accept new status quo.

    Possible? Discuss.

              The best Jack Ryan was Alec Baldwin. I wanted to like Harrison Ford's portrayal, but Patriot Games (the movie, that is) just sucked.

              And I'd watch this movie too

                But an observation first--I think Taiwan is mostly capable of defending itself in the short term. China's navy is a joke at the moment and the Taiwanese have much better fighter jets and pilots--they'd have air and naval superiority over the Taiwan straight. As long as they could keep troops from landing they'd be fine.

                EDIT: Actually upon reading up it looks like China would have ROC naval assets severely outnumbered. A successful defense of Taiwan would depend on the Taiwanese maintaining air superiority, which I think they could do in the short term but not in the long term.

                      Is Taiwan getting the F-35? If Taiwan gets stealth fighters it would make it very hard for China with its current tech to fight them.

                        I am betting that Taiwan won't get the F-35. I am also betting that, were this situation actually to happen, that a good percentage of Taiwan's air force would be caught on the ground in the initial missile strikes from the mainland.

                          I think Taiwan is too smart for that. They'll have aircraft in reinforced bunkers, and the ones nearest to China ready to scramble at a moment's notice. But mostly what is keeping them from falling to Communism is the US fleet.
