A leg shot is a terrible idea. You're more likely to miss and not a lot less likely to be lethal. There is no such thing as a less than lethal shot.

(a) leg shots can be fatal, (b) if the target is moving, they're hard for the average individual to make, and (c) if the target is armed, most leg shots will be non-disabling, so you'd better hope the target isn't a better shooter.

I can make a head shot on an evasively moving human target at 20+ meters. Then again, we weren't budget constrained at the range in the good ol' days, and it doesn't take that much practice to maintain the skill once you have it. Plus I the laser sight on my P-226.

It's not like the westerns.

First, you want to use a hollow point or similar fragmentation round (like Glasers) so that any miss or through and through doesn't hit someone downrange. Second, depending on how someone moves, you have the subclavian artery, humeral artery and jugular, plus the upper lobe of the lung, all in proximity to the shoulder. Third, if the round hits bone and tumbles on impact, it can make a nasty traverse wound channel and hit the spine, heart, any vital organ or organs.

There is no way to shoot someone with effect without a significant risk of fatal injury.

My brother was a better shot, and I know/knew several guys who are as well. 20 meter head shots are no big deal, if you have appropriately structured training, adequate range time, and car wash attendants such as you footing the bill for the ammo.

If you shoot someone in the shoulder they'll probably never be able to use the arm properly again if you hit the joint. Anyway, firearms are lethal weapons, period. You never, ever shoot to wound. Ever. If you want to bring someone down nonlethally you use a nonlethal weapon. Electroshock weapons work best. Then there's OC spray. Then there's stuff like bean bag rounds, rubber bullets, clubs, etc which can cause serious wounds. But you don't use bullets.
