Yeah, me too. This has got to be devastating for everyone involved.

The rule here is that once they've broken into your house, you can legally presume intent to harm and you're not obligated to wait and play quick draw in case the idiot in your house is armed.

The warning shot angle is interesting. Depending on where the shot was fired, no way to prove whether the warning shot was fired first or second.

The kid (and his friends) shouldn't have been that ****ing stupid.

I think that rule varies by state, actually, but given that this is Virginia I think we can pretty well assume that the police aren't going to press charges. And if they do, that the guy will be acquitted.

I'd be suspicious as well. I think even a drunk person would react to a warning shot.

Well, I'm at least glad we could guilt you into a conscience in this thread. As for your...friend. Well, he got issues.

Even hippie dippie liberal ass California law says if they come in, they can go out tagged and bagged, no problem. Not sure if there's really any self-defense hostile states when it comes to in-home defense. Duty to retreat no longer applies.

If I were a parent of a teenager in this day and age, I would read his twitter feed. If my kid came home drunk he'd be a) grounded, b) doing pushups, c) cleaning the entire house with his tongue.

Army ROTC has been a big influence on your view of discipline, it seems.

It's taught me all about the value of physical exertion as a tool for discipline.

And the use of tongues as cleaning devices. Didn't think they actually ever did that

I disagree that someone loses their rights the minute they become intoxicated. His getting drunk wasn't the smartest of choices, but he certainly didn't deserve to die for it.

                            They don't. That was exaggeration.

DaShi, no one deserves to die for being drunk. The point isn't whether he deserved it. He wasn't being punished for anything, it was an accident.

HC, I do give you credit for showing some sympathy.

However, this is the response of sociopath:

Play with fire and get burned. He was drunk. He shouldn't have been drinking at all. He's not even 18, let alone 21. He made bad decisions while intoxicated. He's not getting any sympathy from me. Maybe a darwin award.
