"He" is the great savior of the people, protecting them from the evil imperialist aggressors. The party and society as whole, however, would not approve of you making them look bad by failing to show your greatest appreciation for his sacrifices for all of us, so you will be on your best behavior and show how much we appreciate the great honor of the visit by our Brilliant Comrade (or whatever the **** we call him now), won't you?

I think it gets to the point where the negative threat is so deeply internalized it's not even necessary.

North Korea is just an extreme example. It's not fair to make fun of them. America, for instance, has been in steady economic decline (for everyone who doesn't have a billion+ dollars) for at least 30 years. However, half the country didn't notice until a black guy got elected President.

That's the thing, everyone isn't starving to death. His most loyal people and the most productive workers get enough and cherry assignments while it is the regular people who starve. Even the food aid which SK and the US have sent usually ends up on the tables of the military and the political elites while it is the people in the country side who never see any of it. Food is just a weapon for them.

President Bush: "North Korea is evil? Regime Change! Oh..what? No oil...and they have nukes? Screw 'em...cut off their food!"

President Obama: "North Korea is evil? It's the Republicans fault."
"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003

The half-assed non-end to the war did occur under the Eisenhower administration. With Nixon as VP.

I know it sucks, but it was the best possible outcome. Nuclear weapons ruined war.

It's a pity UN forces didn't push forward and at least take the Kaesong region and the Han river estuary. That would have removed the artillery threat to Seoul, which is feared much more than NK's primitive nukes.

Yep, North Korea has now had sixty years to build up, sight in and fortify the world's largest mass execution.
