  • The lunacy that is North Korea

I didn't get to the end of this but it shows what a loony regime North Korea is. I was punting around to see what North Korea had put out on their new leader. Things to notice, once you get past the endless cheer squads is the bleakness and squalor of even a model camp. A similar island in South Korea would be modern and prosperous with trees and greenery. Not a stick of wood did I see. The housing is bare and impoverished and people look unhealthy. The military equipment and uniforms are dilapidated. South Korea uses high tech robotics in its guard posts. The binos the Leader uses are pathetically weak. Even the boat NK's supreme leader uses to get to the island is a barely seaworthy piece of crap. North Koreans don't know any better. The emotion and hysteria shown is probably authentic. Those who got family photos were very lucky. That could guarantee rations and therefore the survival of your family. Things are that grim in North Korea and even their government can't hide it. I have been there three times.

The farewell at the 8 minute mark is well worth the wait. Please take us with you!

I don't see much change in approach from Kim Il-sung or Kim Jong-il. Here is the DPRK commentary:

Korean Central Television (조선중앙방송) Pyongyang, March 7
Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Marshal Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and first chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, on Thursday inspected again the Jangjae Islet Defence Detachment and Mu Islet Hero Defence Detachment located in the biggest hotspot in the southernmost part of the southwestern sector of the front. The first leg of his inspection was the Jangjae Islet Defence Detachment near from Taeyonphyong Island. He went round soldiers' bed room and education room of the detachment to take deep care of their living. He mounted an observation post to hear a detailed report on the modernization of the post and the enemy targets on Taeyonphyong Island. He said that Jangjae Islet is one of the islets to which he attaches greatest importance as it is located in the southernmost part in the southwestern sector of the front, adding that once a battle breaks out, the soldiers of the detachment should play a big role. He stressed the need for the soldiers to keep themselves fully ready to go into action to annihilate the enemy any time an order is issued and instructed them to deal deadly blows at the enemies and blow up their positions if they fire even a single shell at the territorial waters or land of the DPRK. He had a picture taken with the service personnel of the detachment and their families. The second leg of his inspection was Mu Islet Hero Defence Detachment. He mounted an observation post before feasting his eyes on Taeyonphyong Island with keen attention. He received a report from the commander of the detachment on terrain conditions, distribution of forces and combat preparations of the detachment. He reconfirmed in detail reinforced firepower strike means and targets of the enemy deployed on five islets in the West Sea including Yonphyong Island defence unit and defined the order of precision strikes. He gave detailed instructions to more satisfactorily equip the detachment with weaponry, increase the density of firepower on targets and ensure intensive shelling in order to cope with the frantic arms build-up of the enemy entrenched under the very eyes of the soldiers. Learning in detail about the issue of providing army surgeons at the wartime suited to the specific conditions of the detachment and the issue related to the proposal for operation and combat, he took necessary measures. He was greatly satisfied to learn about the preparations for combat readiness of the Jangjae Islet Defence Detachment and the Mu Islet Hero Defence Detachment. He said that as he stressed during the previous inspection, this is not only the biggest hotspot in waters off the Korean Peninsula but a very sensitive area on which world attention is focused and where interests of many countries are intertwined. He ordered the soldiers of the detachments to watch every move of the enemy with vigilance and promptly deal deadly counterblows at him if a single shell is fired on the waters and land where the DPRK's sovereignty is exercised and thus make the first gunfire and shoot a signal flare for a great war for national reunification. He said all the service personnel of the ground, naval, air and anti-air and strategic rocket forces including the frontline units are fully ready to fight a Korean style all-out war, adding if the enemy makes any slight reckless provocation against the DPRK again in the sensitive waters, he will issue an order to start the just great advance for national reunification in all frontline areas, never missing the golden opportunity. He had a photo session with the service personnel of the detachment and their families.
Expect some sort of incident soon, possibly at sea or an attack on a SK island again

They react to him like he's a combo rock star and the second coming. Their people are so mind ****ed that reunification would be virtually impossible. They'd probably all have breakdowns dealing with the real world.

I wonder how much of that treatment would happen if the alternative wasn't being tortured and killed with your family. They might be quite a closed state, but they're not completely cut off from outside influences.

I would imagine they're close enough that the 24/7 saturation in DPRK propaganda and way of life makes most of them pretty non-receptive to outside influences, with a mindset that it's propaganda/psychological warfare. Basically the DPRK has created its own fundie religion.

I'm suspicious of that to be honest. Every time it seems like there's a population that is completely brainwashed by a national leader, it all seems to break down pretty quickly once the opportunity to be free comes along. All politics is local, and when local is you and your family on the borderline of starving to death..

I think that it would probably depend on how much exposure to the outside world the average North korean actually gets, wouldn't it? Do we even know if the average North Korean has any exposure?

Reunification of the Koreas would be the biggest modern test of this I can imagine.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but the DPRK has gone to much greater lengths and is much more fanatic about isolating the masses from outside influences. They make the Stalinist USSR look like a beacon of free expression, and would probably consider the Cultural Revolution to be so weak it's really counterrevolutionary agitation.

I think it is like Stalin where you have to sing and cheer or you know what he'll do to your entire family.
