    From Wikipedia

The Shahab-3 (Persian: شهاب-۳‎; shahâb means "meteor") is a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) developed by Iran and based on the Nodong-1.[3] The Shahab-3 has a range of 1,280 kilometres (800 mi); a MRBM variant can now reach 1,930 kilometres (1,200 mi).[4] It was tested from 1998 to 2003 and added to the military arsenal on July 7, 2003, with an official unveiling by Khamenei on July 20...

The Shahab-3B differs from the basic production variant. It has improvements to its guidance system and warhead, a few small changes on the missile body, and a new re-entry vehicle whose terminal guidance system and rocket-nozzle steering method are completely different from the Shahab-3A's spin-stabilized re-entry vehicle.

The new re-entry vehicle uses a triconic aeroshell geometry (or 'baby bottle' design) which improves the overall lift to drag ratio for the re-entry vehicle. This allows greater range maneuverability which can result in better precision. The triconic design also reduces the overall size of the warhead from an estimated 1 metric ton (2,200 lb) to 700 kg (1,500 lb)...

These improvements would greatly increase the Shahab-3B's survivability against ABM systems such as Israel's Arrow 2 missile as well as being used for precision attacks against high value targets such as command, control and communications centres.

Little is known about Shahab-3C and Shahab-3D. From what can be gathered, the missiles have an improved precision, navigation system, and a longer range. The missiles were indigenously developed, and are being mass produced. Iran has a production capacity of 70 units per year
Iranian missle technology is pretty advanced unfortunately.

The flight distance between Tabriz to Vienna is 2690 km, so I guess not.

They just have to shut down the gulf by freaking out insurance carriers and shippers to raise the perceived risk level.

I wonder how much money Lloyds makes during one of those scares...

I think the last thing Russia would do is stand and watch. They probably wouldn't intervene with direct military action, but they'd cause carnage diplomatically and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that they'd lay down military ultimatums to the US. Iraq was one thing, but Iran is very important to the Russians. It's also important to remember the Chinese in all this. Any actual invasion of Iran would risk causing a standoff between the US and the two countries in the world you really don't want a standoff with.

Not really sure that the Russians would lay down ultimatums. I think it is more their way to pick some other hot spot and act militarily there. Not sure where that would be, but seems more likely that would be their reaction. Ultimatums are bluffs and sometimes they are called...I don't think the Russians would put themselves in the corner of direct military conflict with the U.S.

China, on the other hand may be looking for a reason to flex their military muscle. Might see something like the occupation of some pacific islands, maybe? Who knows, but I agree that the diplomacy could get pretty ugly real quick.

No. I didn't specify. I thought the context made it clear. I also didn't specify I meant the USA by 'you'. It could have meant PLATO. Do you know what was the first time PLATO made a regime change?

Also, you could argue that your first regime change was your own revolution.

I don't think they'd do it willingly or happily but there must still be some red lines that Russia won't let people cross without conflict. An Iran invasion would be getting awfully close to home for the Russians. I wouldn't imagine the US would be too thrilled at a Russian invasion of Venezuela for instance.

I think the divorce was final in January 1993 if I remember correctly.

I agree, but I see that red line for the Russians being more in Ukraine or Georgia. I don't believe that it would be Iran. Still, it would be foolish not to expect a response of some type by the Russians militarily. I just think that it would not involve direct conflict with U.S. troops.
