From what he's posted, I think he wants to join the guard to do disaster relief...?

Then he needs to think Red Cross. Personally, I think the Red Cross sucks, but hey...

An invasion would be insane. There is no effective opposition to give us a proxy government, and the rural countryside is full of the same sort of nationalist hyperreligious ignorant goat****ers that make up so much of the cannon fodder demographic in the ME.

Standoff weapons to degrade their C&C and air defense capability followed with bombing nuclear related facilities into rubble would be the limits, with the only ground forces being SOF in DA missions.

Or he could join the chair force and drive a truck around a base while real men fight.

If Iran gets on the radar the drawdown in Afghanistan is likely to be accelerated. Reduces the risks of paybacks.

Exactly my thoughts. We might not even have to send in our own special forces. I think it's likely that Israel would be happy to have Sayeret Matkal do it. We might have to do insertion though.

I'm highly skeptical that Israel's special forces would be doing that, and besides which, to my knowledge Sayeret Matkal is not that kind of SOF unit. That's things like AF Combat Controllers and TACPs.

In any case, that's not the job of an ARNG signal officer.

Invasion would not be as easy as it was in Iraq. While I think that regime change would be a very good outcome in Iran, it certainly wouldn't be worth the cost.

The real problem is it might not be possible to take Iran's facilities without getting on the ground.

In that case there's the problem of how do we get on the ground. The marines would probably get to have a little moment of glory again, for once, doing their actual job. That's if they don't all get murdered by shore-based missile batteries as they approach the beach.

Unless we were able to stage out of Iraq.

edit: maybe the 82nd would actually be useful for once too.

There would be a HUGE degree of operational isolation between Israeli and US units, with the exception of CSAR and pararescue. Essentially, a carve out of AORs for DA missions so we don't hit the same goat****ers, but the US and Israel openly jointly operating for any reason whatsoever in any Islamic country will be a propaganda field day for centuries to come. You'd have a lot of real (and SCI classified) cooperation and some coordination at JSOC and CENTCOM levels on up, but that would be mostly collission avoidance and intel sharing, since we have the satellites and other capabilities.
