Well, for light infantry officers I think ranger school kind of makes sense but it's turned into a bit of a ticket-punch where if you don't get the tab you're a staff ***** for your whole career. I'll give you airborne, though. There's no goddamn reason all of our infantry officers need to be airborne qualified. If we do "need" to send them all to a hooah school then it should be air assault. Personally, I'm not convinced the 82nd Airborne should continue to exist at all; I can't imagine a situation where a division sized airborne force with no armor would be particularly useful these days.

Regardless of how you structure the services or consolidate them you'll have turf and procurement issues. The more time officers spend around the Pentagon and the further up the chain they go, the bigger the ego. Second aspect is that getting turf and missions in the first place is the ticket up the career ladder. Defense contractors also have a pretty insidious role - look at the utter waste of the F35 program - but LM is fat and happy and a lot of former officers will find their post-service careers there. At the same time, any O5 candidate or higher who expresses impure thoughts about budget priorities, doctrine, etc., will find it real hard to get congressional approval for promotion.
We would not have the same kinds of problems like the Marines not letting anyone else use their cammies or other such nonsense. We wouldn't have issues with the Army wanting to buy the C-27, the Air Force saying "oh that's our mission you can't do that," then taking over the program and ****canning it.

As for doctrine, there's a reason I excluded combat arms. In particular, combat service support and special branches should be merged. THere's no reason we need separate finance, JAG, medical, veterinary, and chaplain corps for each service. Ordnance/Transportation/Quartermaster can probably be combined between the army and marines as well to some extent. Having a single signal corps would be fantastic, because that's one place in particular where everyone really should have the same doctrine.

On the other hand, if it really is important that marines with their 13 man squads have their own 03 series infantry and army infantry with their 9 man squads are 11Bs then fine, that can stay.

The legal basis is the 14th amendment. I don't have a problem with the current system of granting citizenship.

            • You should. Zygotes are being denied citizenship. What makes babies so much more special than zygotes when it comes to citizenship?

              • Shut up you ****ing dumbass. This thread is now about the military.

Debate time: Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet,

                Saab Gripen,

                or Dassault Rafale?
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
                ){ :|:& };:

I refuse to shut up. I'm invoking the First Amendment.

Gripen can't land on a carrier. Also it only has one engine. Rafale still doesn't have AESA radar. EA-18G has better EW suite than all of them. Case closed, Super Hornet wins.

                        • Isn't Saab navalizing the Gripen so that it can land on carriers so they can bid to the Indians and Brazilians?
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

                          • I imagine they wouldn't bother unless they actually get the contract.

In fairness, the Gripen is very cool for its ability to take off and land on super short icy runways.

                            • Also, Europe tiem:

                              MiG-35 or Eurofighter Typhoon?

                              MiG

                              Eurofighter

This may not be a reasonable question because the MiG is still in development.
