HA! There's a woman at the VFW that we call Donnapotamus!

Dependapotamus is the modern military slang for the phenomenon described by me and MtG, where young men get married earlier than they should to women they shouldn't have anything to do with in order to collect BAH and get out of the barracks. Or just in general military personnel making terrible life choices with respect to marriage.

There were a couple of women in Darwin who were marrying deploying servicemen and then taking everything while they were away and divorcing them, rinse, repeat.

I heard of a couple of Australian servicemen downrange who both thought they were married to the same woman.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

That's pretty much the exact thing the cadre NCOs told us about happening to folks who go overseas. Along with other amusing stories like a soldier coming back from a year-long deployment just in time to see his wife give birth to his new baby boy, soldier coming home from deployment and blowing all his tax free hazardous duty pay on the down payment for a new sports car, then making three payments before the repo man shows up, soldier blowing all his tax free hazardous duty pay on the down payment for a new sports car then totalling it while driving drunk just before the repo man shows up, etc.

The definition still fits, even more so. She doesn't cook. She doesn't do laundry. She doesn't do jack****. I tried to tell the guy.
It was widely talked about that he shouldn't marry her, but I was the one that had the audacity to flat tell him. He's sorry now. Maybe next time he'll listen. I think he will.

Holy **** you are losing the thin grasp on reality you already had.

People in the military are generally ill equipped to deal with civilian life like marriage and auto purchases.

If you're talking about 18-20 year olds just off the farm or out of the small town with no life experience, but they're really no dumber than civilians that age.

My observation was that they're kind of like college students but with lower average intelligence, worse peer influences, and a steady income. Not a great combination.

Some interesting modern issues downrange, like internet access is very important to morale, the downside is instant advice of bad news back home. It had its funny side, with wives and GFs that could mean they get message saying I'm leaving, I got some of those myself, usually just PMT . The next day you get a message saying all is good. Soldiers could be on a bit of an emotional roller coaster, which meant their mind was not on their job.

Another thing was NOK. With today's blended families it was sometimes hard to ID who was NOK. Soldier could report father is gravely ill but its not really his father, it's his mother's latest BF. Hard to work out sometimes, like soldier might ID someone as father but its actually the person that raised them and so on.

The OP in this thread is very much like the first day of spring above the arctic circle.
