I was an infantry officer, from an ROTC set up although it was run as an infantry battalion and you had to move through the ranks - start with a 100 privates in an inf company, commission say 5, after four or five years. Those who don't make the cut left or specialised.

Junior enlisted had less ability and zero authority to get my ass killed, therefore, they ranked higher on the tolerability scale.

Back in WW2, or maybe even prior, there was a saying that "there's nothing more dangerous than a second lieutenant with a map."

And do second lieutenants really have that much responsibility? If I were one, I'd just let my sergeant do most of the work/make most of the decisions and watch what he did until I got promoted to first lieutenant.
Thast's the way you're supposed to do it. "Don't get in my way, or get me killed, thank you, and I'll make you look good.... Sir." It's the ones (1LT as well) who think they actually know something and are supposed to do something that are a danger to man and beast

Good thing I'll be 28 twelve days after commissioning

Yes, MtG, you're old as dirt. Nice to see geniality didn't come with age.
My geniality supply is limited. It's strictly selective fire. If you were actually serious about a career, it'd be one thing. Starting with your old days holocaust denial bull**** under your old handle, this seems like just one more bizarre fetish.

cut Speer some slack, maybe I don't know all the backstory but he has come a long way from the little kid in the projects with his Mom who somehow got an internet connection and lobbed here with his bizarre views and troubles, lol.

If he made Marine officer, however he did it, that would be quite an achievement in my book. His Mom would be proud and I can understand why the Marines might be looking at him because he is cut from the same cloth as the recruits, from the classic "south Bronx ****hole", or Philly for that matter. He has held down jobs and he doesn't snort or shoot up afaik. We should be quietly proud of him in a way. What I notice is he keeps bouncing back, admittedly from problems real or imagined of his own creation, but that's admirable in a young man.

Horse, the reason we rip on Al is that he has repeatedly turned down other better opportunities to pursue a childish fantasy of military life.
