    I fractured my legs.

I was active ground. They're not taking any more active (male) OCC ground candidates this fiscal year. Only reserve contracts.

So, excuses aside, best case is you'll end up a reserve FNG nugget? For what, to prove some point to yourself?

What is the point of dissuading me? I have my orders and I'll be down there soon.

yes. I got on a sinking ship anyway. BNY Mellon lost our contract with the mutual fund advisors we do accounting for so everyone in my group is getting laid off or moved by mid-March.

I couldn't care less about dissuading you. I just think it's all sickly funny. Not to mention confirming my general impression of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children and the quality of the ROTC sourced officer corps in general.

He's not ROTC. Although you shouldn't have a super high opinion of ROTC either (except maybe people from places like VMI or Norwich I guess where they have a corps of cadets) since we spend a third of the time badly doing land nav, a third of the time learning military-related factoids like how to throw a grenade from people who don't really know what they're doing themselves (the older cadets), and a third of the time doing stupid **** like sexual assault prevention briefings. I have a feeling that 90% of what we learn outside of how to wear the uniform/stand in formation/related garbage is going to be in LDAC and BOLC.

I once caught a mouse in my apartment and released it, but fortunately this was urban Chicago and didn't involve any hawks. I caught it by throwing a metal popcorn bowl (think about a half meter diameter or so) at it, knocking it out briefly. Shocked the heck out of me when it actually worked...

I don't have a super high opinion of officers, period. ROTC are the bottom of the barrel, unless you have a reservist who goes to OCS without real active duty experience. 90 day wonders can be good officers if they were solid combat MOS E5 or E6 before they went over to the dark side. The academies and factory schools like Norwich, VMI, Citadel, etc. are pretty variable. Real officers are made from field experience.

I assumed he had some ROTC connection because of the school address line in his orders, and I think it was LoneStar who mentioned he couldn't be bothered to actually go down to the recruiter and enlist. All the pompous **** about oaths stuck out like a sore thumb too.

So what exactly did he do to get himself the opportunity to pollute Uncle Sam's Misguided Children?

If you have a bachelor's degree you can become an officer in any branch by signing with a recruiter and shipping off to OCS. In the Army I understand you attend BCT first and then go to OCS, then get your branch selection and go to BOLC (specialty school). In the Marines I would think you go to to boot first but maybe not.

I don't think you'd find modern ROTC to be that different from OCS. It's the same stuff spread out over four years, with a 4 week course called LDAC between your 3rd and 4th years. We have a number of prior-enlisted in ROTC as well, just like in OCS. The big difference is that it can attract people by offering scholarships contingent on performance academically and in ROTC.

e: also when ROTC cadets commission, they go off to BOLC, just like OCS graduates. So for the most part it's the same training.

I didn't know Speer made it out of high school. You mean he actually graduated college? I had no interest in being commissioned, so I never looked into it. I had OCS "suggested" but I gracefully declined.

MtG, however low your opinion is of officers, you can't possibly expect them to be worse than junior enlisted?
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
