Why don't you study the history of the labor movement? I'm talking about the genesis of the movement to unionize, not when the end result of routine unionization occurred. In many cases, (public service, coal, etc.) it was near a century long process.
Felch is ignorant about the history of American labor. And if he's willfully ignorant, there's no encouraging him to read on this subject.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
What if I want to enjoy benefits of some type of organization or club, but I don't want to join nor pay any membership dues? You're fine with this type of free loading?
You already do. I'm a member of the Isaac Walton League of America, a conservation group (with its own shooting range). We contribute time and money to preserving the natural environment, and you get to enjoy a more beautiful world because of it. Free riding is unavoidable, and the way to minimize its impact is to offer additional advantages to members (like a shooting range). Maybe if unions gave a little less money to gun grabbing Congressional candidates, and spent it opening free shooting ranges for their members, they'd have a jump in enrollment.

I just realized why this will never happen. The point of a union isn't to make life better for its members, it's to raise money for the Democratic party. How stupid of me.

Maybe unions should just hold bake sales instead of trying to collect dues from people benefiting from the primary purpose of a union (collective bargaining for better pay and working conditions).

If you just want to stop unions from donating mandatory contributions to political campaigns, that's entirely different from expecting them to provide the benefits of a CBA for free.

Or maybe they should quit their *****ing and adapt to the 21st century. Unions have only themselves to blame for their decline. Provide something that people want, and people will be happy to pay for it.

I don't expect non-members to benefit from the CBA, they just happen to benefit from it. I have no problem with union workers being paid one scale, and everybody else getting a different salary.
I say make the Pentagon adapt to the 21st century by making contributions to its funding optional. Provide something the people want, and they will happily pay for it.

If the members didn't want the union, they're free to decertify it. They could even change unions. The members want unions, it's the right-wing bootlickers who still buy into the "what's good for GM is good for America" mantra who want to cripple unions and shift both bargaining power and political power more towards employers and employees. If they get their way, maybe we can have Haymarket II.
When all else fails, blame brown people. | Hire a teen, while they still know it all. | Trump-Palin 2016. "You're fired." "I quit."
23% of Michigan state government workers would leave the union if they could according to polling. Hell if the workers want the union so much what harm is there in offering the worker a choice in the matter regarding his membership?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

So 77% want the unions. That's how democracy works.

This also relates to your insipid Pentagon example. Unions aren't a government and a private organization shouldn't get the moral right to force other people to pay into their coffers simply because they are popular. Otherwise, I expect you to start kicking back some of your paycheck to the nearest church.
