I don't see why extending rail lines to sports stadiums & casino is wasteful, personally. Sounds like a good use of funds - easier for folk to be able to make it to revenue generating entertainment services.

In Kansas City they have approved a two mile, $100 Million streetcar from the City Market to Union Station, based on a specially taxed district the streetcar will run through. On the votes 600 people.

I'm with Imran in thinking that extending mass transit to locations where lots of people go is a good idea provided it can be done in a cost effective manner. To get people to ride mass transit it needs to go where people want to go and do it both quickly and cheaply. It would also be nice if it is both safe and clean.
