Pretty much every nation when it came under 'democracy' immediately stripped the Church of her possessions and some even executed the priests. It's been a sad and consistant pattern. In some democracies, this has been restored. In others, it still remains. Like England for example. When is England going to return Canterbury to her builders?
That's just downright silly Ben. No one in their right mind would have accused nor ever will accuse Henry VIII of being a democrat. Henry didn't take property from the Church. As head of the Church he disposed of it as legally entitiled.

No, my claim is that organized religion more often than not stands perpendicular to the concept of democracy.

      • I am waiting for Ben to start claiming that the US should be given back to the English crown.

Against that kind of pure logic, who can prevail?

Even if that's true, the historical fact is that christians(as a group) have done more for the advancement of democracy than any others. It would be insignificant that organized religion stands perpendicular to the concept of democracy.

          • Yeah, but that might be relevant, or might just be incidental. If christianity hadn't arisen, it would still probably be Europe that developed ahead of the rest of the world and eventually led to democracy.

I think you're assuming that there's a pattern to the progress of every human society and democracy is part of that natural progress. I disagree.

              • No, but I'm considering that as populations grow, and people gain more power, it gets increasingly difficult for a central power to control everything. And people do like to feel in control of their lives, at least after they have managed to cover their basic needs.

                • People don't like change, and they really don't like revolutions.

So what? Christians (as a group) have done more for the advancement of trains and cars than members of any other religion. That doesn't mean it had anything to do with the tenets of Christianity.

And it didn't because the two things are different.

                              • Christians invented the political structures that dominate the world today.
