A middle ground is only reasonable if it is actually preferable to either of the extremes. An assault weapons ban, while some here have said means banning fully automatic weapons, usually refers to just the "furniture" of the gun. Does it have a pistol-like handgrip? Does it have a detachable magazine? These things are not actually terribly important to the lethality or danger of the weapon, and are trivial to modify for a criminal if they decide that they really need a forward hand grip for their rampage.
They certainly give you an edge in combat; there is a reason soldiers have them on their weapons. But that edge is fairly irrelevant against civilians.
