Is it just me or is there a price gap between the really common guns, about 300-500 dollars, and the less common ones (2000+)?

Example: 300-500 for a basic remmington pump or a ruger 10/22, 2000 for fancy things like a 7.62 rifle.

NOTE: I don't know a lot about guns, so excuse ignorance please.

Firing slugs in a home defense situation doesn't make sense either. Too much penetration and range. At home defense ranges, birdshot is a slug.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Yes. Try tracking down a Kel-tec.

That said, desirability places a premium on them as much as rarity. M1911s are pretty common, but also very expensive for being the latest and greatest in late 19th/Early 20th Century handgun technology. You can get a new AR-15 for the cost of a "name brand" M1911 like Colt or Ruger.

EDIT: That was aimed at HC.

I use HP .223 in my AR for HD, actually. Penetrates less than Buckshot or 9mm and I live in a apartment.

I wouldn't use slugs for it either. I like slugs because they're fun to shoot. Buckshot makes way more sense for a defensive situation. Birdshot creates lots of really nasty wounds but not very deep ones.

Try birdshot at three yards. With next to no scatter, it'll punch through quite a bit, then scatter.

I thought Kel-Tecs were supposed to be cheap crap that you wouldn't trust as far as you could throw em..?

Also can't an FFL just order it for you from the manufacturer? I've never done that, but it's been my impression that you could just go to most gun stores (not like Dick's or whatever, well maybe like Dick's) and then just ask "hey can you order this gun for me" then you pick it up when it arrives at the store.

None of the individual pellets have enough mass. I don't think they act like a single piece of mass just because they aren't scattered.

Yes, doesn't stop people from wanting them. They are hard to find because Kel-tec makes like 5 of each model a year.

Hell, lots of people buy Taurus and those *******s don't have any QC to speak of.

No, not necessarily. I don't use the LGS as a FFL, I use a guy I know who operates out of his kitchen. Distributors ain't gonna give a **** about him.

"Sure thing. It'll be here in 9 months."

                  "But I want it noooooooowwww!"

I would have preferred that he'd used something other than waferboard, but you get the point.

That was actually quite instructive. Much less spread than I expected.

Dude, you live in Oakton. Why the **** do you need home defense?

...Why the hell would you pay so much for a 100 year old gun? Why not just get a Beretta in .45?

Also how hard is it to find the FN Five-Seven and ammo for it? I have heard that it is a very popular gun, but the ammo is hard to find.

                            No I don't...

Why the **** do you need home defense?

Couple of years back someone tried to force their way into my apartment while I was in it. I ended up holding my not inconsiderate bulk against the door while waiting for the cops to show up...and they didn't show up before the guy took off. So far as I know he hasn't been nabbed.

That really drilled the whole "when seconds count, the cops are only minutes away" thing into my head.

                              Fair enough.

Was the door unlocked? Or was he trying to break it in?

At RIT, not only are guns banned on campus (I don't live on campus; I have my own place), but the campus cops are unarmed. As a result every year some students hold an "empty holster protest" where they walk around campus with holsters and no guns in them. Because concealed carry permits are easy to get in Monroe County a lot of students have them, but they can't use them on campus and in fact they can't even leave the firearms in their personal vehicles. If someone were to commit a violent crime on campus you'd have to wait for sheriff's deputies to show up. Fortunately the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is pretty competent. A bunch of deputies actually shoot at my gun club.

Last year there was a scare where a student had one of those umbrellas with a handle that looked like the hilt of a samurai sword and out of the corner of his eye a bus driver mistook it for a rifle. Had it been a real rifle, he'd have been able to do some real damage before the deputies showed up.
