I'm quoting you in describing half inch holes as "massive." Which they might be in relation to a smartphone or a person's foot, but it's a bit of a stretch when applied to an airliner. Also, there have been a great many planes with holes bigger than a half inch that have successfully and safely landed, so yeah, do you stand by your retardation?

Such large holes can happen as a result of stress fractures in the skin.

The attack could happen on takeoff and not be noticed until a plane as at altitude.

Idiot. If it happened at takeoff, you'd never get explosive decompression because it would never be able to develop a pressure gradient. Nevermind the fact that the pressure difference at altitude still isn't enough to cause a problem.

Seriously, though, planes are actually hard to shoot down, and even if you do shoot them down, they aren't likely to just start tumbling out of the sky. You can take out both engines of a 737 and depending on the altitude and airspeed there's a decent chance that everyone will survive.
