  • I always go with squad sight.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

It's a matter of taste I'd imagine. You can't really call it wrong, as my snipers end up being my most senior and long lasting members in every game I play. It's probably just a variation in play style. I like to keep my snipers mobile and fairly close to the action.

One question btw, does squad sight let you shoot around corners?

          • I am curious about the exact mechanic of squad sight - I often find myself surprised to have it and/or not have it work in certain circumstances.

              • Hmm, definitely doesn't sound like its worth losing snap shot for.

                • If you find some high ground your sniper can provide cover and overwatch for your entire team with complete impunity.

                      • I'll give it a try next game, but seriously you guys should try skilling one up with Snap Shot + Opportunist + Double Tap some time. Keep him/her just back from the front line and experience the joy.

Unless you are fighting on the 3/4 of maps that have substantial LOS blocking, including all of the larger UFOs and most of the terror missions.

                          • Snap shot is actually a lot better than squad sight on most maps. The ability to move makes it very easy to clear the LOS blocks Kuciwalker mentioned. With squad sight, you can just suck a fat one in that situation, to be totally honest, just suck a big fat one, is all you can do.

                            • I usually don't have a problem getting my sniper a LOS at all; you just have to position her competently, and be cautious and patient with the rest of the squad.

In fact, she can be at her most deadly in the battleships, with the vast open spaces and little cover for the aliens to hide.

                              • If you can't get LOS with a sniper with squadsight then that is your fault. On almost every map I can find a position for my sniper.

Large UFOs are vastly outnumbered by the small ones where you can engage the enemy from afar. In most large UFOs a significant portion of the enemies appear outside. On the smaller ones usually only the sectoid commander(s), ethereal, or outsider are on the inside. Several Terror maps have wide open sniper-friendly spaces as well, notably the bridge one with the rubble and wrecked cars.
