      This.

While there is a certain amount of inelastic demand -- if you have to drive to work, you have to drive to work -- it will have a definate impact on, say, going to restaurants and movies, and on vacations. At the current levels I already consider how much it will cost me to drive to a favorite eatery (about $4.00 for the one I'm thinking of). That's 10-20% of a bill right there.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

How is that different from what any other tax does?

Even with the driving to work thing, I'm guessing a lot of people would start carpooling if gas was $10/gallon.

A lot of people wouldn't have to worry about getting to work if it was $10/gallon.

              Because they wouldn't have work.

If you had to pay $10/gallon (equivalent local currency), you're possibly just in Europe.

Edit - Does that repeat regexcellent?

I don't think it does, no.

Here in Rochester if gas were $10/gallon the economy would grind to a halt. We have some token level of mass transportation in the form of buses and no feasible way of expanding it other than buying more buses, which use gas.

I meant it as an oblique reference to high unemployment across Europe/Europeans not working.

That's not because of gas taxes, which are actually smart. It's because they have "strong unions," who keep people from working.

If it was raised to $10/gallon overnight, sure.

Here's a thought for you, most people in haulage/transport are not unionized while many, many haulage/transport companies have gone bust in recent years due to spiralling fuel costs.

Why wouldn't those fuel costs be passed on to customers? How many people are going to stop having their goods hauled if the cost goes up?
